45 ACP powder choice

I picked up a new SR1911 so I'm going to have to start loading for the good old 45acp. I have a couple powders that I have data for which are SR4756 and HS-6. I was wondering has anyone found one to be more consistant or accurate then the other?

Alliant Bullseye or Winchester 231 are about as good as it gets for the 45ACP.  There are are others that work as well but none better than these two.

Lots of good choices for the old .45acp. Bullseye, Red Dot, and Unique, are the ones I have used the most. Now days I use Promo because it's cheap and I have a good supply. It's basically Red Dot.

Win 231 is a very predictable powder and has always been very accurate in the 45ACP, whether loaded way down or way up.  I also like W231 because it burns prettly darned clean but I tried Alliant's PowerPistol in the 45 to see if it would burn cleaner yet,  but the accuracy was awful so I just stuck with 231.

I guess I needed to word that question differently "of the two powders I have listed ie SR4756 or HS-6 (they are the two that I have) has anyone found one to be more consistant?"

Hard to beat bulseye for target loads. I use alot of aa2 also because i used to get it cheap as surplus and still have quite a bit. It works a bit better for combat level loads but if i could only have one 45 acp powder it would be bullseye.

Simplicity:  I have not used HS-6 but I have found SR4756 to be consistent and accurate.  HTH.

I remember reading someplace that the original 45 ACP ammo was loaded with 5 grs Bullseye and 230 gr FMJ. It still is a winner.

  If you do use them, load up a few test rounds & try them before you go into production. Back in the day my 4756 loads wouldn't cycle reliably in my 9mm. Yes I could of upped the charge some & tried more options. Things cleared up when I went with a faster powder.

  For 45acp I use Titegroup & H Universal.

  My most common bullet for the 45acp is the no frills 200 grn plated RN. The RN helps cut down on any cycling problems. I also use that bullet for some 45 Schofield loads.

What kind of loads?  Lead, jacketed, Target, combat, hunting?

I LOVE WW231 for lead bullet target loads. Bullseye is another favorite for the liter loadings.

Herco, Bluedot for heavier jacketed loadings.

Guns like poeple have therown likes and dislikes. There is no short cuts. Buy/look in a couple manuels and start loading...

Well a combination of the three you listed lol jacketed combat hunting loads I have some 200gr xtp's to start myself off. I do mostly use bluedot for my 40's and now for 10mm as well I just don't have data for it in te hornady manual and I don't think I could find it on he Hogdon website. i never thought about Herco I have a pound of that as well I'll have to look further.

I have used HS6 in 45 ACP, worked great for me with Hornady XTP's.  Never used SR4756.  My preference is 231.

     Since I found clays to practice with I haven't loaded anything but. It burns clean in my 45 acp kimber and the residue on the gun just wipes off with a cloth, less clean time more shoot time.

Here's another vote for W-231 and UNIQUE.  W-231 actually seems to give (slightly) the best groups in my M1911 clone and it meters like a dream through my powder measure - extremely consistent from charge to charge.  There's a lot to be said for that.  It burns relatively cleanly too.

I also used to use SR-4756 almost exclusively.  It was okay, giving groups comparable to UNIQUE.  However, like UNIQUE, I found it to be somewhat on the dirty side.  Since I discovered W-231, I've used it almost exclusively.  As a bonus, it also seems to work very well in my 9mm Luger P-38 and my Ruger Security Six - giving the best groups for .38 Special in it that I have yet tried.  I will probably try it first when working up loads for my son's new FNH FNP-40 .40 S&W.
