Valmet 412 - change auto safety to manual
« on: June 07, 2011, 04:53:24 PM »
I recently picked up a Valmet 412 in 9.3x74R. Then I found a set of shotgun barrels and tried it at trap. For the life of me I haven't mastered turning the safety off. So I was wondering how hard it is to change it to a manual safety.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Also if anyone has any extra barrel sets let me know.

  I HATE auto safeties!

Back when i was a Valmet dealer/Distributor, i use to get paid pretty good to convert them to "manual" safe, as i came up with a simple solution to the problem.

Pull the butt stock off, and you will see how to easily get the safety out... You will also see a small rod that comes back and pushes the button on "safe", when you move the lever to open the action.

Look where the rod hits the safety, take the safety to a drill press and drill a hole (all the way through) in that spot for the rod to go through, as that way the rod can't push the button to the "safe" position every time it's used.

After reading this, i know Doug will be tearing his 412 down tonight for the conversion, so he can supply the picts...

Thanks DM but I am ok with the auto safety.  My SxS shotguns have the auto safety with the safety switch on top which I have trained myself to automatically flip off when I mount the gun,  I do the same thing on the Valmet combo guns and  my HK rifles.  It is second nature to me...

Now I just need to learn to not do that when I use the drilling, as the top switch is the selector between rifle and shotgun.

Drilling Man,

Thanks for the reply. The fix sounds easy enough. How hard is it to find an extra safety if I screw it up or want to change it back to originsl?

Thsnks,

If you want to change it back, plug the hole...  lol  BUT, i probably could find a spare safety, IF i really looked around here...

Drilling man, would this also work for a 2400 that has the barrel selector on the trigger? When I open the gun it goes on safe automatically.  Have had this "feature" taken off on my shotguns. However, when I shoot one barrel, it won't let me switch to the other barrel, unless I put it on safe first manually, then push the selector button to the other barrel, and then push the safety off. I would like the safety to be manual, and be able to select the barrels without having to engage the safety first. Is this possible on a 2400?  I know the set-up is different from the 412, as far as the selector goes.  The way the 2400 is set up, if you need to use the second barrel in a hurry, it's not going to happen!

I don't know, as i never had my 2400 opened up...  IMHO double triggers is the BEST option by far...  That's why i went to the 412.

I hear you! Double triggers are definitely the way to go... and a manual safety.

I stand corrected on the functioning of the trigger. Just another pull fires the second barrel.  I was trying this with no ammo in the gun!  Didn't realize it was set up like my Browning, and the second barrel was "set" by the recoil of the first one, upon firing.  Shudda known! Only difference is that the selector is on the trigger rather than the tang.  Anyway, on the whole, two triggers are definitely better and faster than a selective single trigger.
