Sharp edges on receiver end of barrel
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:06:21 AM »
I just found this forum, and it looks like a gold mine of information.  I look forward to browsing through it in the next few days and getting to know the people here.

I have a NEF .308 survivor which I love.  I purchased a .44 mag. and a 20 ga. barrel in the barrel program and have enjoyed shooting them all.  I bought the .20 ga. for my son to learn to hunt small game with.  A couple of the barrels (but especially the .20 ga.) have very sharp corners on the receiver end both on the outside and the chamber.  They are sharp enough that they could gash your hand open when trying to make a fast reload.

I thought I would just take a file and break those edges a little.  I just thought since I had found this community of experienced users I would check to see if there are any reasons not to do this.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome Mike!  ;) If I have to file the barrel's face when fitting a barrel, I finish the edge with 600 wet/dry to break the sharp edge and remove any burrs before I apply any blueing.

I do the same on mine by using wet/dry sandpaper takes a littel of at a time, and the edges will be smoother.

A stone is nice to handle when breaking edges. Whatever you use just wrap some masking or elec. tape below the edge so IF you slip it doesnt skate on down the barrel.

Thanks for the replies.  I was going to use an extra fine file, but the sandpaper or a stone sounds like a better idea.  I was planning to Duracoat it, so I wasn't too worried about removing the bluing.  I just wanted to make sure there wasn't some good reason NEF made those edges so sharp.

Simply POOR quality control. I am sad to admit... Now for the fix...
A file, sandpaper... Really???  Come on guys...

You can tell the gunsmith!!
YES, a stone is what you want, electrical tape for protection is a great idea! I have used painters tape more often but same idea.

I simply use fine sandpaper wrapped around a wooden dowell.    This makes the sandpaper easier to control, getting the inside edge of the chamber is the hardest part, swivel the dowell around there at an angle to the bore.

Yes, lack of deburring and breaking sharp edges is a sign of poor quality control.   Welcome to the late 20th and 21st Century's way of doing things.

No one sugested a file to work on the sharp edge of the barrel, a file is used on the face itself( in lieu of a lathe since 99% of us don't have one!) when fitting a barrel to a frame as stated in the barrel fitting info. Although it would work fine wrapped with fine (220 or finer) sandpaper!!  ;D If sandpaper is good enough to refinish a barrel, it's certainly good enough to touch up an edge!  ::)
