Take me out to the Ballgame!
« on: June 11, 2011, 05:58:17 AM »
I was told yesterday by a fellow coach that Baseball hasn't been the national pastime for many years now - no sport is. The national pastime, like it or not, is watching television.  He may want to add the internet or other electronic games to that, but sadly in most cases he is right.  Well my poor isolated kids don't have television except for the occasional educational show down at Papa Bill and Granny Faye's, but boy do they love to play some Baseball!

I loved baseball years ago. I haven't watched a baseball game since those spoiled brat millionaires cancelled the world series. For kids it's great. Plenty of exercise, learn to follow rules and directions, build character and teamwork. Todays kids DO watch too much tv and play too many video games. I've started noticing the past several years the lack of snowmen or outdoor activity at individual homes. Kids should be outside playing. Good for you Heather, getting those kids involved. I love baseball also. Coaching little league was a hoot. Except for a few parents who thought their kid should always be the star. The kids just wanted to play ball and have fun.

When I was a kid, we would have a game against the kids at the other end of the street in the morning, have a pickup game of older kids in the afternoon, then play on our league team at night (sponsored by the local hardware store, drug store, super market...).
In between all that, we would relax by playing wiffle ball.

Heather I played baseball all through school until my 10th grade year.
I was quite good at it but my coach in my 10th grade year thought that I should play for him.
I told him I never played for anything but the love of the game.
In my opinion baseball is the greatest game ever invented.
My grandson thinks so to he plays center field and has a good hustle.
We been working on his pitching he's getting pretty accurate they let him pitch during practice so far.
He is the youngest on the team 9 years old his coach says he should be pitching next year.
Hard to believe that electronic gizmos beat out any outdoor activity much less Baseball.

Professional baseball can't compete with other diversions. Its boring, the games are too long, and few people even think about it. They've all seen baseball and come to the logical conclusion. Games are also expensive and inconvenient to attend. I don't know what lamebrain decided it was a good idea to make stadiums without convenient parking the national standard, but that probably doesn't help either. Decision was probably made before cars were invented.  Life's too short to sit and watch some guys stand around doing nothing for three or four hours.

Give me high school and amateur baseball any day. The focus is on the game, they players are almost as good as the pros, the bleachers are right up close to the action, and there are no lengthy breaks in the action. My favorite team is the Saint Francis Pirates. Awesome team.

Kiddie leagues? Great for the kids. Not really much of a spectator game, but fabulous for the kids and the families. One of the finest games because of the learning and the teamwork and the camaraderie.

A plus plus to Heather for coaching!!!
