Model 157 Barrel D&T'd Issue
« on: June 12, 2011, 08:12:26 AM »
Help - just tried to mount a refurbished Redfield 4x12 AO to a Model 157 Hornet circa AP with a set of Warne Maxima Rings,  the result is that the scope points 30" right and 24" low @ 50 yrds (well out of scope adjustment) .  - Took it apart and placed 40/1000's brass die shim under the left side of the rail and it did come up but stills point far right.  After looking at it a little closer the lines on top of the scope rail confirm that it is skewed and that the D & T pattern is not on the barrel crown.

Any suggestions as how to straighten this out?

Thanks in advance

See the FAQs and Help sticky, there's a fix by Larry specific for that problem.

Hello, Millet makes a nice set of adjustable rings all steel and around 25-30 dollars I think. Midway has them.  Good luck Tom

Thanks,

I've used the AngleLoc's on my rimfires and know that you can tweak the scope tube if you are not careful.  I've got a call into an old friend who is both a retired tool & die maker and a part time gunsmith - hopefully he is up to straightening this out.

If you want to correct the problem with rings, use Burris Signature Zee rings and their optional offset inserts, they protect the scope and don't require lapping with no danger of tweaking the scope tube as with adjustable rings.

1. Get some proper sized screws for the mounting holes.
2. Anneal them.
3. Screw them into the holes until they bottom out tightly.
4. Tap the heads of the screws with a brass hammer to expand them into the holes completely.
5. File the heads of the screws until they are flush with the barrel.
6. Smooth the file marks with fine sandpaper.
7. The holes should now be properly filled and the surface should be perfectly smooth.
8. Move the scope mount one full hole width ahead of the old holes.
9. Make sure mount is perfectly centered and square to the bore.
10. Redrill and tap the mount holes.

Done. :D

If you did the filler screws properly you should be able to reblue the area and not see the old screw holes at all. ;)
