why is #1 buckshot not more popular??
« on: June 14, 2011, 11:47:53 AM »
i  am speaking primarily  in a 12 guage

i know  it is  first chioce in  16 ga factory

it seems like it should be the best  in general for deer, pigs  or self devence

it was the shot  my dad swore by.....and  i do think  it has an  edge  over the others

i  am sure in any spacific situation  it might not be the ''best''

it  is getting harder to find  ..even online

what  is your favorite buckshot?
and  more importantly....WHY?
does choke  influence your shot choice?

hmmm, I've got a bunch in 16ga. bought for the house gun.  tried 2 of them on a rotten stump. awsome damage.  12ga should take down a hog.

Manufacturers in all industries have reduced options to the most popular (profitable) sizes.  I would think that the demand for various options in slugs has displaced the demand for various sizes of buckshot over the last 30 or so years.

I have never loaded buckshot shells, but I can imagine there would be certain shot sizes that fill certain gauges more evenly and possibly offer a better pattern. Perhaps someone with experience can speak to that idea.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I let the gun tell me what it likes...

In my Brownng B-80, it prefers 3inch mag, Winchester Premium 00 buck out of the Improved Cylinder choke...

My Remington 1100 deer shotgun (21 inch improved barrel) prefers 2 3/4 Winchester Premium #1 buck...

My Davidson 12 gauge double barrel prefers the 2 3/4 Winchester Premiums 00 in the full choke barrel and #1s in the modified barrel...

Some guns just show a preference to different sizes and shot shell manufacturers...

Dont know why it is disappearing. I believe that it is a very good balance between pattern density, and weight. The .30 cal balls kill deer d-e-a-d! 24 per 3" 12 gauge shell are deadly in my 22" 870 with the Patternmaster tube out to around 35+/- yds, which is as far as I need a shotgun to perform on deer. Farther than that and its a carbine, rested pistol, or rifle. Great for close quarters moving shots, like when I still hunt blowdowns, or thick swamp bottoms. I cant find it anymore, so if you do, please let me know where. If you dont buy it all ,and I wil get the rest! Havent used it on hogs myself, but my older brother in Conroe Texas has, and also gives good reviews. Glad i'm not the only one who still appreciates it. Will admit that the larger pellets like 00 kill better on longer shots, but you have to really know how well your gun will pattern because there are less of them to put on target. If you are in an area that mandates buckshot and need a little more distance, maybe, but for my needs, #1 is the way to go. My 2Cents! :)

Here we are required to use buck shot to hunt deer in some counties. So we have several gun smiths that make good money making guns shoot buck shot in nice tight patterns that kill deer at some really long ranges ie; they can keep it in a tight pattern as far out as the shot still can do its job. The ones I have talked to say #1 is the hardest to get to pattern well in a 12 ga.

My old Mossberg 500 does very well with #1. Unfortunately, Federal discontinued the excellent, copper-plated, buffered Federal Classic in 3-inch #1.  I can still find Winchester unplated #1's at gun shows.  I wanted to check the pattern with  my Mossberg 835, but all I can find today is 00, 000 and #4.  Shame.  I killed quite a few deer with #1's in my Mossy. :(

Can't use buck shot here in New york for deer. So for home deffence I keep the 835 loaded with buck & ball. 50 cal. round ball and three 00 buck shot. Buck & ball was quite devastating for the English out of thier brown bess.
