Anyone wash their soft sided handgun cases?
« on: June 14, 2011, 12:51:22 PM »
I have both hard and soft handgun cases, same with the rifles too.  Some of my cases are getting old and have gotten their share of dirt and dust on them over the years.  They all have the nylon zippers in them.

Anyone wash theirs and have a suggested way of doing it?  I don't want to spend the money to dry clean them, thinking of putting them into the washing machine, and let them air dry outside, especially since it is 100 degrees every day here in Texas.  I also would like to wash the foam in some of my hardcases, getting saturated with oil and dust too.  Nervous about having any kind of water get into an area where firearms are stored, rust risk, etc.

I would stay away from the washing machine.
The long size and the spin cycle do not work well together.  I ruined a sleeping bag in the washing machine when the spin cycle spun the bag out of the machine and cut the zipper through on the lid.
A hose and hanging it to dry would be my idea.
Hang outside open in the sun for a day or two or .
Zip it up and stick it in the dryer do not use till completly dry.

mcwoodduck...I see your point.  Last year I put my old sleeping bag into my washer and dryer a few times, sure did shorten the life of it.  But, I got 35 years out of it by not washing it on a regular basis.  I could hand wash the cases, I asked some Civil war re-enactment people how they washed their hats and they mentioned some mild dish washing liquid being the key.

Give them to your wife to wash with her bras and stuff ;D.

If you have access to hockey goally pads wear them and shout something like "wash these woman, I'm goin' fishing with the boys!"

Never have washed any of these. The oil in the foam shouldn't hurt anything?

With hard plastic sided handgun cases, I wipe them on the outside with a damp sponge occasionally.  Once a year, I apply a coat of vinyl preservative like you use on car dashes and door upholstery.

My soft side cases are water resistant ballistic nylon.  When they start getting dusty, I wipe the outside with a wet sponge (no soap).  Once a year I apply a spray water repellent to the outside which contains a UV block ingredient.  Same with nylon holsters.

I have never had to clean the inside of my cases.

ive washed them. We have a huge front load washer and i put them in alone. I wouldnt dry one though as ive tore them up in a dryer. I wash them and hang them on the close line. To be honest anymore i just buy cheap cases from midway where there on sale. You can pick them up for 15 to 20 bucks. I try to keep a half a dozen new ones and when the old ones get crappy i either toss them or bring them to camp and watch all the tight sobs out there fight over them.
