Or try a Tikka or a CZ.  ;) seems like Remington has become the "off brand" since they were bought out.  :o

The woman said "It should have been sent back but shows it's still in the repair shop". Said she was going to E-mail the repair shop to have it sent back. I also asked if she could tell me if the receiver had been rockwell hardness tested and she said she was the longest employed rep there and had never heard of rockwell hardness tests, so she couldn't say, but said it was probably magnafluxed. What a joke, I hope I never have to send another gun back to them
.[/color]

Fastchicken, uneducated reps, one hand knows not what the other is doing at Remington.    Magnafluxing is to detect cracks or hidden impurities in steel,  Both of which your receiver seems to obviously have in your photo, a clear crack 3/4 inch long and what looks like visable pits can be seen with the naked eye.

To what address did you mail your receiver to?   I went to a Phil Pilkington gunsmithing seminar with a couple of fellows from the Remington Custom Shop, and I'm within 40 miles of Madison, NC, Remington's headquarters.

Yes, Swampman, from a strength standpoint the Ruger cast flat bottom receiver is stronger than the Remington round bar stock receiver.  Never heard anything about barrel installation or removal damaging a Ruger 77 receiver, have seen first hand examples of damage to Remington's receivers from barrel removal/installs.

In reality they are and in all directions where forged are directionaly strong not in all directions . I find it almost unbelieveable you didn't know such . Magnafluxe is a good test. When I worked for a short while on the over the road tracrors that hauled gasoline we had to magnafluxe the front spendles after so many miles to check for cracks , found one on a Dimond Reo.
As an aside I read the other day that S&W didn't harden frames that were going to be nickle plated  :o

None of the off brands will withstand what a Remington 700 action will take.  They are by design, construction, and material...totally inferior.

It was sent to the Ilion Ny plant, that's where they say to send them  [I sent a NEF to the same place for warranty work and it had to go back a 2nd time because they did not headspace it correctly]. I told the woman that the magnaflux will only tell if it is cracked, not why, but she assured me that they ran whatever tests that needed to be done ::).

Drop a 150,000 psi round in all of them and see which one will still look the same after the round is fired.  This is because of the safety breeching.  Previous to the 700, it was only seen on a few rifles. (the Japanese did it on the Arisaka) I can't name any others that did it before the Rem 700 series.  A safety breech is where the bolt actually goes inside the barrel making for a much tighter seal.  Remington was not the first to use this but Remington was the first large scale manufacturer to mass produce rifles with this breech style.

Clearance on a good safety breech is 2 to 5 THOUSANTHS which handles extreme overpressure (protecting the user, hence the "safety breech name)  A conventional breech have up to 30 thousanths clearance between bolt and breech/barrel allowing molten brass to explode gun in an overpressure situation.  The Model 700 is the strongest boltaction centerfire production rifle in the world.  It's also the best selling and the most accurate.

Bigblock, don't confuse swampy with facts, his mind is made up. Some old, dead guy named Jack could not possibly know as much as the swamp gas does.  ::)

http://www.chuckhawks.com/finest_bolt_actions.htm

I do like my Weatherby Mark V's with the 54 degree bolt lift. I have the 6 lugs actions with 7mm-08 Remington and 338-06 A-Square cartridges.

Don't forget the M-5 also has 3 thicker rings of steel and a larger bolt . Remington has been producing affordable hunting rifles for a long time and to do so they can't be the best of the best .
Sako is also better

In response to the original post, I'm going to express a different viewpoint on this.

I think you are one of the luckiest men in the world, and you should get down on your knees and thank God.  You discovered a crack in the receiver of the rifle before it blew up in your face and blinded or killed you! What a great gift.

Yes, it should not have cracked, but defects are a fact of life in modern industrial society.  So you bought a consumer good 12 years ago, for a few hundred bucks, and now its broken.  Throw it away and move on.  I doubt you would have had all of this anxt over throwing away a 12 year old washing machine, t.v. or dishwasher.  You certainly wouldn't be calling Maytag and demanding a new one.

Pay $290 for the new barrelled receiver and be happy.  Or, go to a gunshow, find a used rifle in VG+ condition, of a reputable brand, buy it for $350 and be happy.  I am always stunned as to how emotionally involved men get about guns.  They are just machines, not sacred heirlooms. :-)

Then on the other hand Remington can increase its image with standing behind its product , one could assume worth way more than one reciver .

Remington doesn't have a lifetime warranty.

I know they don't nither do some other manfs. but in an extreame case like this they could step up to the plate . And after years of stating their 3 rings of steel was superior to others and all. They had a chance and didn't take advantage of the good will it would bring them.
