Shot The Maxi Today
« on: June 16, 2011, 11:56:07 AM »
Was able to shoot a little this morning. Only had a 50 yard range but the results were good. :)

Shooting 180 gr. XTP over stiff load of 1680 produced impressive results. What surprised me was that my cast gas checked 158 gr. SWC, from Lee mold, shot into very tight groups with POI very close to the 180 gr. These also were loaded with heavy charge of 1680.

I'm looking forward to trying it at 100 yards. But that'll have to wait for another day!

This rifle doesn't shoot 357 mag as well as it did prior to reaming but I'm well pleased with how it shoot the maxi rounds.

Your maxi is gonna shoot lights out at 100 yds, they just do.  It's probably my most favorite, even though I like the 454, and the 45/70, and the ......

There's two 270 yard gongs at the shoot we're going to in August.  They're about twelve inches tall and five in diameter.  I'm going to duplicate the range and targets here for practice.  There are two rifles I want to use.  The Maxi, and the Maxi Long Rifle (the .38-55).  I'll count my clicks up so I can easily return to normal 50 and 100 yard sighting.  I can hit them readily with the .45-70 and my bottle necked calibers as so can almost everyone at the shoot.  I think whacking them consistently with a pistol caliber and an old timer may get some attention.  A couple of the guys there nail them offhand shot after shot.  I can't do that anymore....to much old age wobble.  A couple of other guys can tack them with handguns.  That's way beyond me.

Good luck Parson, ya gotta love your Maxi :-* :-*

I actually hunted with this rifle last deer season, but I had only shot the 180 gr SSP bullets. It shot them well enough but I wanted to see what it would do with other loads. I was especially pleased that it shoots the cast as well as it does. Looks like I'll have to fire up the pot and break out the molds!

Petemi, I wish that there was a range of that distance around Indianapolis! I have to drive quite a distance just to get to a 100 yd. range. And, I know what ya mean about the age thing. 6 or 7 decades make a definite change in a person! :)

parson,

I love my Ranch Dog mold for the maxi.  It's about a 190 grain gas checked tumble lube bullet that I dip in the alox and trim it with the waxmiester.

Here's some of my latest load development.

Aw come on Rev, I know you just put up the target and got a Maxi cartridge and poked holes in it. There is no way a cheapo rifle  like an H&R can be that good! I pay much more for my guns...blah, blah, blah... ::)
