swift caliber question

Ok-Anybody ever hear of a .240 Swift ?   I've got a fella with one for sale-has a casting of the chamber and he was told by the caster/gunsmith that it was a .240 Swift ......Oh it's a Springfield 1903 rebarrel-FWIW.

 Anybody have some backround on this one ?  Any and all input is greatly appreciated.SAS

Hello, SAS98M.  A .240 Swift?  I wonder if it is 6mm.  Interesting!  If it is, someone has just re-invented the wheel, by re-introducing the 6mm Lee-navy.  I have an early Winchester .236 (6mm) Lee, sporting rifle.  The .220 Swift case was based on this Spanish-American war era case, with a few modifications done by Winchester when they brought it out.

They made a 240 Cobra which was a 6mm off the 220 swift case.

.240 Swift or 6mm Cobra is what the seller has. I try to stay far away from wildcats, but you may feel differently about it. Good luck! Be sure and verify the receiver is not one of the earlier Pre Heat treated ones. A check of the serial # will provide that information.

Mine is a #3 Ruger that was originally a 45-70 (kicked way to hard) Had it rebarreled to the 220 Swift, shot coyotes for several years then got CRAZY for 2 days in Montana shootin gophers (Richardsons Ground Squirrels) and removed the throat and about 2 inches more rifleing, it was so hot you could smell the wood!. Had Delta Gun Shop simply rebore to .243 x 9.5 twist (no other changes) and use a 6mm Rem neck die to resize. It isn't the Swift any more but a mid range 243 Win. Shot some rock chucks w/it last weekend 65 gr VMax & 75 gr Sierra HP) and love that rifle again. It seems to like shorter bullets and slower powders which w/ a 243 is an oxymoron (SP?). Only shot one deer w/it so far (old box of Nosler 85 gr solid base) 1 shot broke neck laying down at 40 yards. My 2C worth-Swifty

BTW. I guess I should have said that I simply had the barrel rebored to .243x9.5 twist and left the 220 Swift chamber as is and it is NOT a .243 Win. chamber. The 6mm/Swift doesn't have the case volume a 243 Win does which is why I said it is a mid range 243 Win.  Swifty

When the super .220 SWIFT  barrels were worn out the owners had then recut. The one caliber that was easy to up grade was the .240 COBRA. The SWIFT case was blown out to 6MM and back to varmint shooting. This predated the 6MM Remington which was copied from a German 6X57. Remington even used the 7X57 case. So much for Remington innovation. ::)
