Turkey call for coyote
« on: January 01, 2004, 04:39:48 AM »
When I was out deer hunting you would always hear the coyotes yipping it up around where I heard the turkeys in the morning and just before dark.  Last week I went out with my predator call and called for a few hours before dark and didn't see anything.  That's not unusual for me here in New Hampshire.  There are coyote tracks everywhere but none to be seen.  Anyways, on my way out of the woods I saw where a group of turkeys had crossed this field.  The coyote tracks were really concentrated in that area.  I was thinking of setting up my turkey decoys and using my turkey calls to see what happens.  Anyone else tried bringing them in using this method?

NHANG,

I am in Northern NY and have been thinking about this same setup. We are completely overrun with turkeys. I am going to try this weekend Jan.3-4. Let me know how you make out and I will do the same.

NHANG,

I am new to predator hunting, so I dont have a whole lot of experence... but we have quite a few turkeys here in northern Michigan also. I was out tonight at a new spot and saw where about a half of dozen turkeys had went through...right in top of thier tracks were a set of coyote tracks following them.

Also I just picked up a JS Preymaster e-caller a couple weeks ago...one of the sounds is a turkey distress...it is one of my favorites. I had one coyote circle and bust me once already when I used it last week.  I am thinking of picking up one of the foam turkey decoys and trying that along with the caller. Hopefully it will give them something to eyeball other then me.

Good luck,
Bill (MI)

This can work very well and is happening to turkey hunters much more frequently. The coyote will often hit your decoy hard!
This is a great change-up as you wont (burn-out) your call site by using one call only.

NHANG I guide goose hunters in Alberta and  while i can't speak about turkeys I have used a single goose decoy around water with the saddest most wounded sounding goose call i can make and have great success in late autumn after coyotes. I believe at this time of the year coyotes are capitalizing on the wounded birds that escape the hunters and end up to weak or injured to fly just as in November coyotes will respond to a gun shot looking for a gut pile or in the spring patroling around cattle herds looking for after birth or weak calves. find the food and you'll find the dogs

I am a turkey hunter in NE kansas.  I have had coyotes, in spring, stalk my decoy and one ran up to it before I yelled at it.  didn't shoot because I was turkey hunting.
My friend had a bobcat pounce on his turkey decoy.  saw the claw marks on it.

The HS Strutt Dbl Kee Kee is still one of my favorites. I use this diaphram call with normal clucks at first but then get it going very fast and high pitched. Still makes for a great changeup call.

I've killed more coyotes useing my turkey call than any other caller. I have 8 "wild" turkeys that live on my property. It gives me a great chance to listen to and mimick there sounds when I'm out in the woods. Turkeys are constantly making small noises when they think there safe. I use a box call a friend made for me. The coyotes usually charge in though. makes for some very fun fast action. All started when I was bowhunting for deer one day and watched 2 coyotes team up and kill a turkey. the next day one of those coyotes ate an arrow thinking it would get another turkey dinner.

I often start a set with turkey yelps then switch to a distress call, I've never had a coyote come in to the yelps that I know of.  I believe the turkey calls may give the dogs a little more confidence, like throwing in crow calls or decoys.  I don't think the calls have ever scared off any coyotes.

I have not used a turkey call for coyotes. But have used it for turkey where I knew turkeys to be.bear have came charging in.smalll black bear.and when they saw me they turned and ran..(thank god)..I think any weird animal, bird sound will bring a coyote in whether it coming to feed, mate, see whats going on or laugh.

The Coyote is opportunestic but very inquisitive and any sound that's like an animal or bird in distress will get them to come in for a check. By experimenting with different sounds you will find some of the strangest sounds will get the attention of a coyote there is no set rule when it comes to what will get the attention of any wild meat eater........Joe........

We use an electronic call to coyote hunt and on occassion, I use turkey calls (I do not hunt turkeys) just to change things up from stand to stand. Last year my brother and I came across a field with very tall grass that the owner had not had time to cut for hay yet. Near a very small stream on the edge of this field, the grass was all matted down in an area about 15' across. In this area, we found 5 wild turkey feet and a lot of feathers. There was nothing else ... no bones, skulls, etc. We assume coyotes had done the killing, as there are many of them here, and drug off the turkeys to feed somewhere else nearby.
