MECHANIC. Me too. Many years ago in So ILL we saw roads leading up into the hills with signs that said, road closed because the snakes were breeding to keep them from being run over, had gates up too. Don't know if they still do that or not. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Yep, they're protected here in Ga. too, unless they are in a place where my grandkids might happen upon them, then they've had a bad day.  I don't kill anything without a purpose, including snakes.  They are a part of nature too, but best left alone if in the wild.  Most times when someone is snakebit, they were messing with the snake.

I have a friend who owned an animal park for a while, and I've seen him step into a pit with 20 or more rattlers, use a staff to sort the out and pick them up one by one to demonstrate to the watching public.  He never got bit, because he knew what he was doing.  He also kept antivenom on site just in case.

For me, I'll leave them alone to cross the road on their own...

I think any more rattle snakes are protected everywhere.
The company I work for was clearing an area in a mountainous area for a gas compressor station. Rattle snakes were common in that area, so the state sent a women to look for rattle snakes, so they wouldn't be harmed, and when she found one it was captured and moved to another area.

I have "helped" a lot of snakes off the road with a shovel. Just gently prod them along and they'll go. I leave snakes to their business except if I were to find a rattlesnake around the house or barns. I haven't seen anything but a couple of blue racers around the house in many years. There is is always a cat or two that prowls around and takes care of the snakes I think. There is a big yellow one that comes around just about dark checking things out now.

I like cats but have been out of the cat business for a few years. I got tired of just raising them for coyote food.

I'm not 100% sure but I don't believe they are protected in Okla.
They have a couple rattlesnake roundups a year out in the west part of the state.
The skin them and cook them up. You can get rattlesnake burgers.
Of course the do real well out there also. I'm not sure they could be eliminated out there.

In Va we can't kill snakes unless they are with in 150 foot of a house or other structure if i remember . I have killed to many copperheads on my walk and one in the bath room  but no rattle snakes yet. Years ago we hunted them for fun around pastures and watering ponds but no more.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

The article said the timber rattler was "endangered".  They are not on the endangered species list.  That is bogus by the person who wrote the article.  In Alabama they are not protected.  They have a rattlesnake roundup in LA every year (Lower Alabama) near Opp, Alabama I think.  They are captured, their venom is extracted.  Some are killed and cooked, made into belts and things.

I think the poisonous snakes should not be protected.  Next thing you know, they will want to "protect" deer, rabbits, quail, ducks, turkey, squirrels, elk, moose, and any other hunted species.  I will not kill a non-poisonus snake, but will kill a poisonus one especially around my home.  I will not go out of my way to do so in the wild, but around home, another story.

Any animal that's endangered needs to be protected.  Too many idiots kill every snake they see.

A few years ago I killed one at Spruell Bluff campground while sitting up on a rock ledge.  The ranger saw me do it, told me he could arrest me because they were protected.  I just assumed he knew what he was talking about.

I've killed several Copperheads and one Rattlesnake around my home. Why? Because I seen them first and that's not always the case. Besides, they don't consider me, nor my loved ones, endangered nor protected by law! The Rattler was coiled up next to my dogs food dish!

80% of those bitten are bitten while trying to kill the snake.  There's something to be learned from that........

Probably so, that's why I use a .410! That guy that got bit wasn't trying to kill it, just shoo it away!!!! I don't enjoy killing them but I don't enjoy getting bit either. A rattler at the corner of my house could easily find it's way inside and I don't much care for being a prisoner in my own home afraid to step outside. My wife and grandchildren don't like getting bit either!

I helped this one cross the road with a 12ga during turkey season on our lease. It's a little over 6ft 10 rattles and a button.
I'm sure glad I met it on the road and not in the brush.

It sure seems odd to find that so many "outdoorsmen" suffer from unnatural phobias.  You guys should stay in the house.

My favorite story like this comes from nearby there in new York. A guy stole a gaboon viper from a zoo and had it slung over his back in a cloth sack. The snake, which by the way is of the specie with the longest fangs I've ever seen, was docile for a while but eventually bit the guy through the sack. A very astute doctor realized what had happened and was able to save the crook.

Well, I've killed one Copperhead in my life, that I can remember, and then only because it was crossing out of a golf course into a neighborhood one night.  But I was in the "Protect and Serve" mode then.   ;D

But I'll pop a cap on a Rattler in a heartbeat!  Not 'cause I don't like them, I think they're beautiful!  But Maybe I like them to much... especially breaded and deep fried!   :P  And you can use the skins, heads and rattles for stuff!   :D

HEH. Just remembered, I did have a chance many years ago. My cousin and I were hunting in So Ill and found a rattler in camp. Glen teased it for a long time til he killed it. He started to peel it out so we could try eating it but it smelled so bad we decided we didn't want to taste it after all. We heard later that it would not have smelled like that if we had just killed it instead of making it mad, don't know, but I'd still like to try it. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Snakes usually die pi$$ed off. They all smell the same. Eating Rattlers be careful of the very sharp spines on the bones. They can hurt your gums and tongue. OUCH. :) They can be slowly cooked in olive oil and garlic. If the heat is to high they can be very tough. My advise only eat snakes if you can not find a cheeseburger. ???
