Bullet for .44 spl.
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:40:40 PM »
OK, Veral, you have not steered me wrong so far.
Looking to buy another mold for my Ruger flat top .44 spl. Thinking about 280 gr. Maybe a WFN. Will use it for large game and plinking. Want the best accuracy possible for this caliber. Not sure if I need to go to a gas check for maximum accuracy or not. Prefer not to, but will if it will help. Thoughts Veral?
I don't worry bout nothin', cuz nothin's alright!

Best speed I've gotten from a 44 special with a heavy bullet is 1100 fps using a 280 gr WFN.  Good sane pressures in the heavier guns, and safe in a Charger bull dog, though recoil in that little piece of iron drawed blood from fingers hit by the trigger guard, back of the gun, hammer etc, with 2 or three shots.   If the gun has fixed sights and heaveir than the standard 240 250 gr bullets are used, you have to drive them hard to make them hit to the  sights.

Your Ruger will handle that much pressure and more, which is still very mild compared to magnum loads.  In other words, you won't need gas checks to get top drawer accuracy, if your barrel is smooth, the bullets are properly fitted and lubed with LBT lube.
