Got my load
« on: June 21, 2011, 05:43:45 PM »
I have finely found a load for my 3oo weatherby Mark V deluxe. 178 gr. Hornaday A-Max and 88gr. of H1000 it will put 3 shots in a 1/4 in. at 100 yards. I have a Burris 4-10 on it. Me and my Bro. have a matching pair down to the scope. Our grand pap bought them for us on the days we where born. I plan on killing something with it this fall. So he has the memory to share with us.

It's a good feeling when things get together. Are you going to use the
A-Max for the hunting ? What speed do you get from this load?

Was wondering what you are going to hunt with this bullet as  Hornady specifically says "not recommended for medium or large game hunting".  A 300 Wby is pretty hard on anything light (except w/ TSX's)  and w/minimal penetration is NOT SUITABLE for anything I would want to eat -Swifty

No, That's the V-Max bullet. The A-Max is fine for deer. I make mostly Head/Neck shots because the weatherby is so fast I don't just poke holes through them.

I gather you have another 300Wby since you just found a load for this one "I have finely found a load for my 3oo weatherby Mark V deluxe. 178 gr.  The A-Max is a thin jacket target bullet, and the core is not bonded or physically locked to the jacket. At the 300 Weatherby velocities, the bullet will probably come apart on impact with an animal.  I use Hornady's Interbonds and get excellent accuracy and performance. Good luck with your hunts.

Thats part of the reason I am a fan with head/neck shots with the weatherby

Ethan, Go to the Hornady website then to bullets then to overview and read the A-max description. It specifically uses the quote "These bullets are not recommended for hunting medium and large game". Swifty

Something else I'd be careful of. The load indicated is 2.8 gr. over max in the Hornady book. I'm sure the Wby. rifle will take it but you are definitely dancing w/the devil as far as case strength goes at these pressure levels especially as some Wby brand cases are fairly soft compared to other brands. I typically use reformed WW 375 H&H case in my 340 Wby. specifically for that reason as well as they also last much longer at factory pressure levels. Swifty

Ethan,

Since your rifle likes the Hornady bullets, why not try the 180 gr Interbond as it has almost the same BC and SD as your A-Max. Someday you might come across a buck that you would like mounted, and a destructive neck shot will make a taxidermist's job a bit more difficult.

Good point. I have found some interbonds and I loaded some TSX bullets.
