New guy from SoCal
« on: June 21, 2011, 06:08:39 PM »
new to this board, been on Gunboards, CalGuns, Rugerforum, 24hourcampfire, etc. for few years.  I'm 68, retired, love double shotguns, double action revolvers, and single shot rifles.  Shoot all of those when I can; hunt varmints and birds, reload several calibers.

Live in Orange County CA; I'm from Northern California (raised on a cattle ranch) originally but my family came there from SoCal so some of my roots are here.  Lived in WA, OR, ID, WI, VT, and upstate NYS from 1970 until I retired  in 2007 and moved here.  Do a lot of volunteer work here; mainly helping restore burned areas and wildlife habitat that has been damaged by overgrazing, oil fields, and abandoned agriculture.  Hard work, much like landscaping, but fun in limited amounts (I work about 3 half days a week).  Also do some outreach work to the schools for the restoration groups.  We work on land owned by CA Fish and Game, primarily.

Gets me out in the boonies a lot, although many of the areas are wildlife preserves with no hunting or shooting.  Hunting is a long drive from my home, so I only get out a few times a year, but have a great time.  Mainly hunt quail and chukars, but have a couple of varmint safaris a year, too.  There's more hunters and shooters down here than meet the eye, for sure.    And I can walk four blocks to the ocean and go fishing any time!

Glad I found some fellow graybeards!

I basically swapped spots with you moving from Riverside County about three years ago.
When there i belonged to a couple clubs.  One just south of Corona that had a 20 Acer range.  Membership was affordable and you got a key and a membership card.  Basic range rules for safety and to prevent damage were in place but as long as you cleaned up any targets were allowed.  The freinds kids liked fruits and vegtables and the explosive effects projectiles have on them.  Let a kid shoot a bag of baking potatoes with a 17 HMR and that potato turns into a 3 to 4" round white ball.  But I digress.
The club has weekend shoots that go till about noon.  Running deer and tactical being the first weekend.  Running deer is a standard deer target at 120 yards that is hooked up to a pully system and your first shot ( center fire) starts the deer running.  4 rouds are fired at each turn.  If you don't get off all 4 they back up the deer.  Making it single shot acceptable.  A full box is needed for the event.
There are black powder shoots as well as shotgun fun shoots and cowboy action.  More formal rifle and pistol shoots as well.  Great club and better group of guys oh nad some gals that are avid shooters.
The tactical shoot is a combo of steel and IDPA and is wheel gun friendly with the stages set for 6 rounds.
There are members of all ages in the club.
If you want more information on the club let me know and I will PM you information on how to meeet up with them.
