CVA w/h powerbelts & sabots
« on: June 22, 2011, 03:10:41 PM »
I'm curious if anyone else has a problem shooting sabots in their cva muzzleloader. I have a 2 year old cva wolf .50 and it will key hole sabots, but it shoots powerbelts just fine. I'd rather shoot sabots due to better options for bullets. I shot a 4 pt last year with the aero tip 295gr at about 30 yards and I had a HUGE entrance hole (no exit hole). The only other option I have is the Hornady RFB. Anybody have experience with these bullets?

The Hornadys are awesome.

the FPB is a son of a gun to load, and in that older model cva with the tighter bore, basically impossible.

What sabot/bullet were you shooting in it? As well as what primer?

Have you tried T/C CheapShots.  They shot sub-MOA in my $88.00 CVA.  80 grains of 3f or Pyrodex is the heaviest load I'd use.

Thanks for the replies. I tried some kind of TC's I got from wal-mart, but I can't remember which ones they were. I had a hard time zeroing my scope so I went to the target and noticed the keyholes.

Im currently shooting 100gr of Hodgdon pyrodex loose powder, 295gr Aero Tip Powerbelt, and CCI 209 shotgun primers.

maybe the tc shockwaves.

I'd check out the 260gr Harvester PT Gold and the Harvester Black crush rib sabot.

While you're at it, pick up a new box of Winchester 777 primers, these should perform much better than the hotter CCI Primers. Primers can greatly affect your accuracy.

If you were shooting a lighter sabot 250 grn or less, go to a heavier sabot 300 grns+ or vice versa. Length of the sabot has made a difference in the various inlines I've owned.

+1 - I like the CheapShots on 85gr Pyrodex RS in my CVA. Killed deer, and shot as well as XTPs
