Taking the Handi to the Range

  I finally have gotten settled into my new house. Fidelity came today and provided us the internet, phone and cable service. I won't have any of my household goods until the 1st, but that's good since the interior is being repainted next week. The weather here in SW Oklahoma is quite a bit hotter than the Midwest where I grew up and have lived most of my life.

  I got an invite to shoot at an outdoor range in nearby Duncan this weekend and plan to take my 45LC Handi. Pete's recent success with his rifle has renewed my favor for mine. We'll have to wait and see if this heat affects the way my rifle shoots.  With any luck, I'll send a few rounds down to the 200yd targets and see how well the accuracy holds.

  Although it won't be needed until these temps drop, I hope to designate my 45LC Handi as the "HOG BUSTER".

Hey, keep in mind what happens in Africa with heavy loads developed in cooler climes........
and have a really good time  ;D.
If you get a chance, check out the mountains in Oklahoma.

EXACTLY my first thought!! (Great minds ;) ) Some powders not temp sensitive, older ones ARE!!  Just beware if you had any hot loadings, these are most likely to be too hot now...

Thanks guys for the cautionary reminders, I'm shooting 16.5gr of 2400 behind a 335gr CP lead bullet.

  While in temporary lodging, I stayed at a cabin in Medicine Park, OK. The Wichita Wildlife Refuge entrance was a mere 200yds from my driveway. We drove up Mt. Scott and got a panoramic view of the mountains, not too bad for Oklahoma. After a trip to Alaska a few months ago, it takes alot more mountain to impress me.

  Thanks, I may take you up on that offer. But....there are a few things that could keep me from being there.

#1- If I get drawn for an on-post elk hunt
#2- If I get drawn for a elk hunt on the Wildlife Refuge

Both are very unlikely, but they are a rare opportunity and crazier things have happened before.

Glad you are familiar with those 'mountains', most people think they only have flat. I motorcycled through there 25ish years ago and was totally surprised.

They have some large caliber, long range "varmit" guns at ft. Sill. Check them out, give us a report.

I bet my new unit may have some of them "varmint" guns, the 214th FA Brigade. I'll look into it.  ;)

Today's range trip was under less than ideal conditions. I would bet it was over 100 degrees in Duncan today before 10:00 a.m., the wind was blowing from the South (a 100% value) at around 20mph and I didn't have a rest to shoot from. 2" groups were today's best from my 45LC load that usually shoots around half that. I did manage to ring the 200 yd gong a few times, but it took some consideration for wind and drop.

I tried some of the Hornady Superformance 30-06 180gr SST ammo in my bolt-action and it shot very well. Too bad it kills on both ends, I'm bruised and sore now after shooting the entire box.  :-\

Sorry to hear about the hot weather Dinny, but glad you're settled now and got some time to shoot.

I can relate to the bruised and sore, even tho I was shooting on the Leadsled, I got a terrible headache from the recoil shooting the 405 and 444 Friday, I had some more loads to shoot in the 7mm-08, but had to quit because of that and my eyes were gettin so blurring from looking thru scopes all morning, gettin old is the pits, used to be able to shoot all day before that happened, only made it half a day both trips this week.  ;)

Tim,
   I don't know too much about the getting old part, but a bad day at the range is still better than a good day at work. Work starts back up for me next Wednesday and I have a strong feeling that I will have a multitude of things to re-acquaint myself with... I'm back in the "Real Army" again, not a joint unit anymore where service regulations and standards are loosely interpreted. It's gonna be dress-right-dress, standing tall and looking good with 40 inches all around. ;D
