New Lone Ranger Movie
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:45:54 PM »
Just seen on tv that there is a new Lone Ranger movie in the making. Can't recall the guy going to play the Lone Ranger but what caught my attention was who's going to play Tonto. Guess who? Of all people....Johnny Depp! I like him well enough but I really think there are lots of talented "Indian" actors who would do more justice to the part unless it's meant to be a comedy. Always was a Jay Silverheels fan. :)

Too bad they didn't tap Wes Studi for the part. He would certainly have the look and he is an excellent actor.

I don't think I like johnny Depp.  I went to one of those Pirate movies and I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever saw.  I just hope and pray the Lone Ranger film doesn't make them gays.

I hope they don't modernize it and that they leave it a period piece.  Adam Beach would be my pick. Johnny Depp is a bad choice.  Aargh!!

They must be running out of things to remake. I'm surprised they're trying cowboy movies again. I sort of agree about the Indian actors. Surely there's a good choice from among them. But the remake will probably not be Lone Ranger and Tonto as heroes, they'll more likely be conflicted anti-heroes, and rely on special effects. I seriously doubt that the story will be good. One thing is for sure: The white man will be portrayed as flawed and the Indian will be portrayed as superior that saves the day. Could be a good thing for an Indian kid to have a movie like that available, but it would be more effective if the actor were an Indian. Otherwise it's just a feel-good ego trip for the producers.  Remember the Clint Eastwood production of two movies called something like "letters from Iwo Jima". Sure made the Americans look like a bunch of vulgar monsters while the Japanese hero was a civilized and highly educated ex-olympian athlete.

Of course a miracle could occur and it could be a good movie. All accounts are that the remake of True Grit is a good movie. Haven't seen it. The original was an excellent movie.

In any case, lots of old guys like cowboy movies, so now they'll have something new to see.

+1. I love Wes Studi. He is a great actor.

It sounds like they are gearing up to butcher the Lone Ranger

I have liked Wes Studi in everything I have seen him in.  Although he was miscast in Geronimo, his superior acting skills allowed him to pull it off.  My favorite of all his characters was Magua (?sp) in 'Last of the Mohicans".  He should have won an Academy Award for that performance.
Spirithawk, you are fortunate to have him as a friend.

I agree with you on the Academy Award. I love that movie and Studi gave a heck of a performance. I've tried to read the book three different times. I read a lot but I just can't wade thru the writing style of the era in which it was written.

I like Graham Greene and August Schellenbach too although they may be getting too far up in age for this role?

Oldandslow,  I struggled through the book, but read it after I had seen the movie.  I think I was expecting the book to be like the film, but it was very different, and even the characters in the book were different than those in the movie.  I agree about the writing style - almost like reading a different language.
Back to the Lone Ranger movie - I will probably miss this one because I do not like Depp.  If I recall, he is the one who moved his family to France because he didn't want to raise his children in a violent country, while he makes his living (and a good one at that) playing violent characters in American movies.
Thanks for the stump

johnny depp is a fellow sportsman and hunter.    years ago, someone on g.b.o. went on a hunt and in camp was a man and his son who were out on a hunt.   the g.b.o. member commented on how nice the two were, down to earth and he never thought much of it.   he later realized the gentlemen and his son was johnny's dad and johnny depp himself.
with all these moron actors running around, interjecting themselves into political situations and  making fools of themselves, i would think a guy like johnny depp would deserve a fair shake, at the very least.    you might not like his acting, the roles he has taken, but when was the last time you saw him support some kookoo cause or say something objectionable?
