my encore is ready
« on: January 01, 2004, 11:32:19 AM »
Well after changing my mind a million times I finally made a decision and bought the encore.   I bought the 15" 7-08 barrel and I'm going to be sighting it in this weekend.  I'm going to be shooting remington 140 grain hollow point for coyote.  Does this load sound ok?  What fps loss do I get in a 15" barrel compared to a standard 24" rifle barrel?  I mounted a weaver 410 base, a 1.75-4 tasco scope (It's all I have for now), and I used B-square rings (hopefully these will hold tight enough, again it's all I have now will get millet later).

I don't know how the 140 will perform on yotes. But, I have found velocity loss to be about 10-12%, pending caliber and bullet weight, and case capacity.

my 15" 7-08 shoots my handload of h4895, and 120gr noslers at 2800fps. remington factory 120gr hp ran right at 2700fps. i shot some 140's but did not chrony them. for coyotes, a lighter bullet may be a little better for expansion, and a flatter trajectory. that is as long as accuracy is there, and you're not saving hides. my thoughts anyway  good luck, :blaster:  and keep us informed how she does.

I'm so happy I went with the 7-08 it has practically no recoil!  I was expecting it to want to jump out of my hand and it felt way less than my old single action 44mag!  I have the rubber grips which I think helps also, I can't wait to break it in on a coyote this winter!

I shoot the speer 145 grspbt with Imr 3031@2585 fps and the Hornady HPFB with IMR 3031 . Shoot the 100 gr for varmint and the 145 on bigger game.  Get 1" or better on both at 100 yds when I do my part.
