Mauser Sights

I got back an old Mauser 95 short rifle with a full length stock that some one kind of sportized.
Well it is a handy rifle and looks good.  Still in 7X57.
The sights are small and was wondering if there were largeer sights I can mount cheaply on the rifle.
I have $75 intothe gun.  I like the clean lines of the rifle and do not want to mount a scope on it.
Any suggestions?

mcwoodduck:  I'm not speaking for the gunnut69 here but I have changed out the front sights on Mausers before, cheaply and easily and have gotten a much better sight picture in return.  SARCO or SAMCO usually sell front sight kits or packs of target blades (square tall front sight blades) for Mausers that can be worked down to give you poa impact at 100m, seeing as how most Mauser rifles I have ever shot have the lower inverted V front blade designed to shoot high at 100 but be on target at 300m. 

The sight blades are for the Swedish Mauser but I believe all Mausers, save the FR models, have the same size dovetail sight base.  I used the Swedish Mauser blades on my Yugo M48A and what a difference.  To enhance the overall sight picture I used a small Swiss file to 'square out' the rear V sight for a much cleaner overall sight picture.  I think the entire pack of 3 or 4 sight blades might cost about $10 or so. 

I know the 8mm Mauser 98s shot high at 100m and I think the 7's were probably the same but even if not, a nice square front sight blade really helps.  Also, I believe that Brownells carries replacement front sight blades (some with a white stripe, too) for Mausers.  You can also check with MidSouth and some of our other sponsors.  Good Lcuk.  I'm hoping the gunnut69 may have some better suggestions that I can put to use next time I too decide to fiddle with a Mauser front sight...

The little small ring rifles in 7x57 are great hunters and would work for nearly anything on this continent. I would install a Marbles front with an ivory bead..(available at Brownells) and a Williams receiver sight on the rear..  The cheaper model (can't remember the name-CRS active) would be the perference.. Cheap light and very quick. You might find a Lyman or Redfield in the appropriate model available for less money on the auction sights,.  Even Ebay has them!!

For $25, Williams Gun Sight Co makes the WM-96 in either open or peep sight config.

It's a drop-in, fully-adjustable replacement for the military Mauser barrel's rear battle sight longleaf.

Add a drop of bright orange sight paint (or nail polish from a teenage girl) to the tip of the existing front sight blade, and try it - you just might like what you see.

I'm not certain for the 95 but usually theres a small scerw retaining the sight sleeve (base) and it's been sweat soldered in place.. One need to locate the retention screw and remove it, then apply heat from a propane torch to soften the solder.. The base can be left in place and the 'ears' cut off and the flat ground (filed) flat. If narrowed a bit it can become the home for your back up iron sights.. I've found the peep apatures mounted forward of the front receiver ring to be poor choices.. They just don't work well that far from the eye. But that base as a platform for irons can do nicely. narrow the platform and file in a dovetail. Checker the base and it;ll look great. That's the platform I started with doing metal checkering.. The file came from Mittermeyer I believe...was a long while ago.

I half hartedly joke about being Mechanically declined.  I think I can grind and make smooth as I was a sand man on a fiberglass crew and made small and large areas flat on boats. 
While I work with plumbers now I can not solder and get made fun of when forced to.
If the new williams sight requires that I think it is headed to one of the two local gun smiths.
I will ask him about it tomorrow when I pick up my new Henry 22LR.
Thanks for your help.  I really like the way the rifle looks, shoots, and feels.

How did you make out with the model 95?  I am in the same boat.  Just ordered a new front sight from Brownell's but it is back ordered.  I don't think the Wiliams M-96 sight will work because it hinges at the front while the 95 sight has the roll pin at the rear.  I'll probably use the higher front sight from Brownell's, square up the notch in the rear sight and call it good.  I have also been toying with the idea of getting the Williams Foolproof or 5D for it but then it needs to be D&T'd which would set me back another $30.  At the same time it would make for more precise aiming which is always good.

Let me know what you did. please!

All the sights ai could find are for either a 98 or a 96.  The 96 sights go the oppoiste way.
What I am thinking of doing is having the gun smith level the sights and mount more modern sights like Williams sights that are on my Ruger M77.

I think I've saw those Mauser replacement front sights advertised by Sarco in the past.  Numrich may also carry them?  If you get tired waiting for the backorder.

I was the rear sight I wanted and they were all 180 degrees from that I wanted.
There is the other option of a reciver mounted peep sight.
