Fla. hog hunting ??
« on: June 27, 2011, 08:54:29 AM »
My nephew has the chance this coming Aug. to take part in a hog hunt/culling op. in northern Fla. Regs say he doesn't need license and methods/bag limits are pretty much wide open on private property with owner's permission. Couple of questions--Does he need to carry a written permission slip from the landowner ? Is it legal to hunt hogs at night with the aid of a lite in his situation ? Does his being a non resident alter any of the regs. invoved with this ?  Just want to be sure he's got his T's crossed and his I's dotted. Any info or suggestions woul be greatly appreciated and welcome.

Many thanks,45-70. Lot's of info available if one knows how to access it. Just a matter of getting him outfitted with the small, but vital stuff. Snake leggings and therma-cel required ? What about bug proof face net and gloves ? Treestand or ground blind ?

Even into late December, Florida can be either quite humid or quite chilly.  Mother Nature can be fickle.  Mosquitoes and insect annoyance factors (ticks, chiggers, flies, etc.) are always a consideration and NOT having gloves and a face/head net is your choice, but not recommended.  Easy enough to stick them in one's pocket if conditions warrant.  Snake leggings - never worn and I don't use but all locations are not the same and some places are crawling with poisonous snakes.  Therma-cell is a great product.  So is Permethrin.  Search that topic on the GBO boards for a wealth of information.

FL law in regard to hogs(2010):  They are considered "domesticated wildlife" belonging to the land owner upon which they occur.  On Private land there is no size restriction, no bag limit, and no regulated hunting season.  Hunting with a light I do not know, but DEFINITELY NOT one affixed to your rifle or shotgun.

Keep in mind there's a fair chance he won't see any hogs in north FL.

Swampy- only going on what the property owner told him. Might be a wild goose chase or might not.  Adventure for a couple of young men none the less. Taught him long ago that if he has to kill something to have a good trip ,he's in the wrong sport.

I hunt N.W. FL every year and see hogs every year.

Ya they get gun shy real quick where I'm at in the N.W., right after gun season
starts they go nocturnal abuot the only way is sun up or sun set if your lucky, I have pushed them up stalking and dont mind doing it as long as I can see around me farley good but when the swamp gets real thick I give them plenty of room and respect.
