Knives are dangerous
« on: June 28, 2011, 03:55:41 PM »
I logged onto MSN and found this: "One company recalled about 217,000 of it's cutlery sets due to a laceration hazard".  :o I thought knives were designed to cut stuff. Why would you want a knife that won't cut anything?  ::) It went on to say that Calphalon's 8" slicing and 8" bread knife can protrude through the bottom slot of the wooden holder block. They have had ONE report of a cut finger injury. You can contact them for a repair kit to fix the hazard. The cutlery set is made in China. I wonder if the factory got their inches and millimeters confused?  ;D Anyway someone is watching out for us dummies.

I agree with Sprithawk.  Bought a new set of knives for the kitchen.  My son and I love them, they are serrated and cut through stuff so smooth.  We've had to take the wife to the hosp twice, she had to have stitches.  Also three knuckles on her left hand are currently bandaged, she keeps cutting her self.  She complains they are too sharp, she wants the old dull ones back.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I love to cook, and can tell you that the dull knives are the most dangerous ones. You have to force them. A good sharp knife is easy to work with.

One thing that can make a knife hazardous is the packaging. I remember a biology class where we had to buy scalpels. Three students slashed their palms open with identical wounds because of the way they tried to open the package for the same brand of scalpel.

Not being used to sharp knives is another hazard. I made this mistake once when using my then new hunting knife the first time on a deer. I pushed the point through the ear to put the tag in and cut myself because the point went in so much easier than my previous knife.

My wife has a good sized collection of good quality kitchen knives. When she says "Honey, my knives need sharpened" I grab them and sharpen them. For years every time the knives were sharpened she immediately cut herself. Several years ago as kind of a joke I started setting a box of band-aids by her knife racks after the sharpening was finished. I told her it saved me work as she could just put one on instead of hollering for me to get a band-aid and put it on her cut. It seems to have had a good effect as she hardly ever cuts herself with a just sharpened knife now.  ;D

I really don't like dull cutting tools. Be it knife, saw, chisel. file, rasp, or whatever, I want it sharp. If you get hurt using one it's because YOU did something dumb and not the tools fault. That idea can carry over to other things also.

Dull knives are like unloaded guns . In need of something before being useful.
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I suppose so, if one is forcing a dull knife toward part of one's body. Personally, I stop trying to cut something when I find a knife is dull and take the 15 seconds it requires to sharpen it, or just use another knife. Then I can cut myself like a real man should.

LOL, its refreshing to know I am not alone...

I have explained DULL knives are dangerous because you have to work harder to get them to cut. SHARP knives are safer as long as your careful with them.  Cuts, jabs are common place here.  LOL

Every-time I sharpen her knives she complains about them...
