Something broke today.
« on: June 29, 2011, 12:23:02 PM »
I noticed when I checked my model 97 for empty this morning that the half cock didn't feel right.
I went to the range to chrono a couple wadcutter loads and pointed the gun through the Chrony, put my finger on the trigger-Bang! with just the lightest touch. Huh, thought it was a fluke, tried it again, and it went off again with just the lightest touch. Same for the other 3 rounds. it's firing with less than one pound of pressure on the trigger, I would estimate it's just 3 or 4 ounces to fire it. Normally it has a healthy 3 to 4 pound pull.
Unloading it, the half cock again felt wrong, a gritty feel to it.
Something is definitely wrong.
I'll have to call F/A in the morning.

Good luck with the call. I've tried numerous times and got only a busy signal. Since they filed for bankruptcy I dunno if they are still open or not. I hope they are and that they come out of the bankruptcy stronger than ever but I've not been able to reach Bob by phone to ask.

Others haven't had a problem contacting them. E-mail Bob Baker if no one answers the phone when you call, John.
They completed work on two of my guns that I sent to them earlier this month. Took about a week or less.

Great.

Since my long distance carrier AT&T charges me from fifty cents to a dollar a minute I don't make calls from my home phone. I have a magic jack VOIP phone and that's what I use to make LD calls as they are free on it. I've tried dozens of times to get thru to them and always get a busy signal tho all other calls I've tried to place on it work fine. I was concerned they might not be open.

Well now full cock is basically gone. I can get it to catch once in a while. Half cock is still there.

I suppose it's a broken sear nose?

I've been out of the loop with F/A I guess, sorry to hear about the bankruptcy.

I've got a FA 97 that sometimes acts the same way..  Let us know what you find out.

First, make sure the gun is unloaded.  If the trigger won't reset when the hammer is cocked with the barrel elevated, but will if level, pointed down or manually, chances are pretty good its a broken trigger spring.   Experienced the same problem a couple of days ago and had no problem getting thru to FA on the phone.  A replacement spring is in the mail.   Call Freedom Arms, ask for John, and he'll diagnose the problem over the phone.  Make sure have the gun in hand when you call.

Do Freedom Arms guns break often?  There are lots of stories of people returning Rugers to the factory for sloppy workmanship, but rarely for breakage.

I've had mine for close to ten years. A broken spring has been my only issue. You don't hear about much else AFAIK.

Just got off the phone with these extraordinary people!  I've got the front screw for an ISGW rear sight for my 353 and a Premier rear sight for my 500WE on the way... ;D
