Barnes TSX 130gr in 264 Win Mag for Bear?
« on: June 29, 2011, 04:07:30 PM »
I have bee really looking into purchasing some Barnes TSX bullets lately. One gun I was thinking about using them in is a 264 Win Mag,130gr bullet. What I would be using it for is Black Bear and Whitetail deer. They both are in season at the same time. From what I have seen on the DVDs from barnes they look to be very effective.Do you think this would be a good combination?

How long our your shots?

The TSX don't always shoot in all guns, I have had real good luck with 165gr in a 06 and very poor groups in a 300wm same bullet.
Remember it's where the first bullet goes out of a cold barrel that counts most.

Not being a Barnes bullet fan, I recommend the Nosler 140 grain Partition for Deer/Bear and even Elk.

I think it should work for you. As we always hear the biggest factor is shot placement.  At close range you should be able to really pick your shot, if time isn't to much a factor.

if you lined up two bears or deer,  it would shoot through them end to end. it is plenty.

If they will shoot well in your rifle they will work OK. Black bear are no harder to kill than a deer. Try you some Retumbo powder. I shoot 130 Nosler Accubonds in my 264 Win mag which has a 27 3/4" Shilen barrel and I get 3350 fps with 130 AB and 66.5 grs Retumbo. I have shot 5 deer from 80 to 250 yards and all were DRT. I did recover one bullet from a buck shot at 111 yards that was almost facing me with a slight left shoulder angle toward me. Bullet entered the edge of the left shoulder and was found in the right ham when cutting up the meat. Bullet weight was 87 grs with a text book mushroom.

One thing is for sure - you'll get an exit hole. Always a good thing for shooting fatty bears.
