Mossberg 100 atr. 308 caliber
« on: June 30, 2011, 01:52:58 AM »
Just bought the Mossberg 100 atr from Academy. Haven't shot it yet but I do plan on shooting tomorrow.  I was wanting to know if anyone has one and how it performance is. From my understanding Mossberg has not made a bolt action rifle in 20 years. Mossberg is dependable company just like Remington and they are both are American made.

I shot the .308 today and the results are okay. The firing pin spring seems a little week on some shots because it would hit the primer but not hard enough. When I go home I took the bolt system apart cleaned it and re-oiled it. Haven't re-fired it to make sure that is not the problem. If the problem persist, I may get a new firing pin assembly. Sometimes it did not want to load properly. I'm not sure if it is the cheap magazine or other mechanical problems. It seems to have problems when it loads from the left side of the magazine. The right side had no problems loading. I shot off a sand bag at one hundred yards and had a grouping of half inch. Any advice would be nice on the misfiring and magazine issues.

I've read 2 reviews where the atr had problems with firing pins that broke and magazine followers that stick.
Harry is right send it back for repairs.

I saw this rifle (chambered in 30-06) on sale at Academy in Austin for $199 - I was tempted.

ive bought an o6 and two 243s so far. All for gifts but i load for all of those people and i know each of those guns has at least 200 rounds through it. Not one has given a bit of trouble and all three are very accurate guns. They arent the prettiest thing in the world but they are good serviceable hunting rilfles

My son has killed a bunch of deer with his .30-06.

The guns are very accurate. Unless you get one of the new models with a Lightning trigger, the pull will be heavy and scratchy. The local Academy is running the Maverick version for $180 his week. I expect to get one to give as a Christmas present. In the meantime I will tune the trigger.

A friend of mine bought the Bantam model for her son last fall. His birthday fell just before the opening of deer season, so he hunted with the heavy trigger. Over the summer we have been tuning it so it will be ready this fall with a light and crisp trigger pull.
