Fun for who?  :o

DD you can be fiendish when you want!

Other than it looks to be a muzzle loading cannon possibly a mountain howitzer
I have no clue where or what the story is.
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Maybe we could make our best guesses, and you could tell us if we're getting 'warmer' or 'colder'.

From the pine tree-
I think its located possibly near, or definitly East of the Mississippi River.

If its near the Miss. River, and being on a hill--- its on a hill for sure,
but one overlooking the river near Vicksburg, Miss.

12 Pdr. Mountain Howitzer M1835 in northern Wyoming or Southern Montana.

I'll fire a volley and see...

The cannon was made from relics collected from Civil War battlefields where General Custer had fought. The gun contained 4 pounds of brass buttons, 4 regimental and 3 division bugles, 80 buckles,23 spurs, 2 brass keys from Ford's theatre.... ??  ???

I have to ask you this GOW; with the information that you have presented here concerning Joseph Trax's 'Custer Cannon', how did you manage to end up speculating that it might be the mountain howitzer seen in the photo that DD posted?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I did an internet search for "custer battlefield cannon" as I knew DD had been through this part of the country lately.  The info seemed about as goofy as his leader so...

No other logic, rationale or resemblance to truth whatsoever.  :D

Nope nothing to do with Custer, he had already had his special event about a year earlier with the Northern Cheyenne and Sioux when this cannon earned its fame

Captured by the Nez Perce?

I think this is the best clue.  DD's answer to George leads me to believe the Nez Perce have something to do with this.

By questionable recollection of a recently seen statement, the Army artillerists fired one shot (actually two shots acoording to the wiki article) at the oncoming Nez Perce in their attempt to reach Canada and were overrun.  I guess they had no supporting infantry.

See this wikipedia entry for some details about the Battle of the Big Hole.

Growing up in Montana, Chief Joseph was always my idea of a true American, a great leader and in a class by himself as a military strategist.  I didn't know about the cannon... thanks to all for sharing!

Notice anything strange?

The number (111A) seems kind of odd; never heard of one having a letter as part of the registry number.

Notice anything strange?

Yes, I believe I do: This mt. howitzer was examined by that famous Federal artillery inspector Mr. National Park Service, and he left his usual proof mark of an 'A' after the Army Registry number, which of course stood for AOK. ;)
