#1 ruger 4570. It believe it or not is one of the most consistantly accurate rifles i own. You can put about any bullet ahead of about any powder and it will shoot near an inch. It puts 5 of those big cast bullets into the same ragged hole if its a load it really likes. Kind of comical. A guy fights a centerfire bolt gun to get moa with jackted bullets and this single shot does it with cast.

Those are good rifles, I have one in a .375 H&H mag and it is a shooter!
Good thing about one in a 45-70 you can load it to low level .458 Win mag territory!!

My Ruger no. 1 in 45-70 with the only change being an after market trigger is also a shooter.

Cast bullets into .9 tenths of an inch.

The 300 grain jacketed bullets into .604 inch at a velocity of 2300 FPS using Norma N133 powder.

The only draw back with the above jacketed load is the recoil, it is not far behind my .458 Winchester Mag in an 11 pound P14 Enfield with a Shaw Barrel.

You are soooo right lloyd!  Kinda funny....mine shoots 1" at 100 with 350gr speers.  handles like a shotgun really.

After reading all of Paul Matthews books, I started to get a Ruger#1 in the .458 Win mag as he wrote about having one that he used for deer in Pennsylvania with cast bullets! It was very accurate and he could load it at 45-70 levels or pretty stout .458 loads depending on hunting situation. He also had a 45-70 in the Ruger#3! He used them both for deer and hogs with cast bullets! Books were a good read and lots of reloading and casting info!! One of his books is about paper patched bullets which was very interesting and how they affected accuracy!

I had a 1H in 458. It was a very accurate gun too. Proably just as accurate as my 4570 but it was just to heavy to tote around in the woods all day. It weighted a good 2 lbs more then the 4570

The old quote "Only accurate rifles are interesting" is so true.  Brings a smile to your face when you find one that is just plain "on", without having to jump thru hoops to make it shoot.  I have several like that, and unlike a lot of my rifles, they will never be future trading fodder.

even the #1s in 4570 are a joy to carry. they dont weight any more then a standard 22 inch bolt gun and because they carry more weight to the rear actually feel lighter in the hand. they handle like a good double shotgun. there no were near as heavy as the 458 1H or even a 1B.  The #3s are defineately lighter. Realy to light for anything but factory level loads. I allways tell people the two worse kicking rifles ive owned are my 50ak with loads i wont tell you about and the #3 i had using ruger level loads. It would make your eyes water. Made shooting a 416 weatherby seen like fun. It was a good accurate gun too. Not quite as accurate as this #1 but then again the design of it kept me from experimenting with any stout loads. I sold it because of that reason. I didnt want to cut it up to put a pad on it and that curved butplate made it as much fun as sitting at the bench and having someone swing a sledge hammer at you!

It's fine it you don't try to make it into a .458.  Trapdoor loads are a joy to shoot and they'll kill anything.

My little number 3 in 375 Win. is a joy to carry AND to shoot.  It's also very accurate with several loads, keeps giving me cloverleafs, she's such a good girl.   DP

agree with you there swampy. I had a 44 mag and a 375 #3 that i foolishly parted with and would have a 4570 is a second if the owners werent so proud of them. Shooting trapdoor loads it would be hard to find a better up close whitetail or bear gun.

It's fine it you don't try to make it into a .458.  Trapdoor loads are a joy to shoot and they'll kill anything.

I've always been curious about the recoil claims on the #3.  Mine (45-70) was cut flat (just ahead of the buttplate notch on the top) and a small (.85 in) pad installed when I got it, so it's very slightly shorter, and I have never really been bothered by it.  Maybe the original curved plate makes it worse.  But I have probably never gone above 1,750 fps either.

Well, my RUGER #1-s, 45/70 has not yet given me the groups I desire, but it did, on Augest 1, 2011, just two weeks ago, put a 465gr cast boolit into my second cast boolit critter.
 
A very large and barren cow elk, here in an Ideeeeho early any weapon and anterless season.
 
To say I am impressed is an understatement.  The 45/70 with cast, is awesome.
 
Anyway, I have 35 test loads, built around recommendations of my .462/465gr mold maker, headed for the bench early in the morning.  Weather being OK and all that.
 
So, while my cast boolit groups may never equal the tiny groups spoken of above, it probably is due to my casting abilities and not the beautiful #1, I am happly hunting with at this time of my life.
 
Two deer tags for the general season starting Oct. 10th, so maybe cast boolit critters #3 & 4 will be falling to the 45/70 before years end.
 
Starting this cast boolit game hunting a bit late in life, I hoped to take an elk sized or bigger game animal and have now done so.
 
Guess you can say I am a happy camper!
