Tom,

I almost bought one a few months back and bailed out because of concerns on brass availability.  H&R has discontinued this gun and I believe Marlin no longer offers it in their lever action rifles.  If I bought one I would buy a bunch of brass so I don't end up like some of the 445SM groupies. ;)

+1 on that
Even if you get a 'buy' on the rifle you will lose it on the brass, so another caliber with easier to get brass may be the better buy.
I like the 45-70.

If you're buying new old stock or used at a very good price then go for it but otherwise I'd get the 45/70 as it'll do everything the 450 Marlin will, and brass is cheap and available.

Tom, a short time ago Midway had .445 brass and I bought 200 nickle plated and .433 GCs from Montana Bullet works.  That brass will keep me shooting for quite a while.....my shoulder will give out first.

Yeah, the brass is pricey, but if you prorate it over the number of times it can be reloaded, it's not that bad.

Pete, FWIW, before resizing those nickel cases make SURE they are really clean and, even though you are using carbide dies (I hope) watch them for scratching.
Nickel cases are known for being a bit 'problematic' and having a shorter lifespan (prone to mouth splits).

Just a note as it has not been suggested, so maybe you know. But the 450 Marlin case shares the dimensions with the other belted magnum cases, BUT the belt is thicker. (Taller)
Making it safe from fitting into other smaller bore magnums and prohibiting you form making them from other magnum cases.

I thought that belt was in a different location. :-\

Only because its wider. ;)

Belted cases head space off the belt. So a thicker belt will prevent it form allowing the bolt to close in a STD magnum and allowing a STD magnum to seat too deeply to allow a firing pin strike, if it was short enough to allow the action to close.

I have an Ultra in 450 and love it. I also have a 45-70. The point of the 450 was to fill in a void that was created by the old trap door rifles. Not very many companies make a factory loading to the levels of the 450 Marlin. Now if you have a 45-70 and reload your own it will do everything the 450 will do and more. I leave my 45-70 for shooting cast and lower level loads. The 450 i have loaded with 350gr flat nose bullets at 2100fps and just take it out for the big stuff or show how it makes a pass through a chunk of power pole at a 100yds.

gcrank, thanks for the tip.  Yes all my straight dies are carbide, and I will follow your recommendations.

Why go for something that will beat you half to death.  Plus the old 45-70 can do anything the .450 can.  Are you going to hunt Dangerous Game?  Guaranteed a Deer or Elk or Bear is not going
to know the difference being shot with a .450 or a 45-70.  45-70 brass and ammo is easy to find.
