gun blueing ?
« on: July 03, 2011, 03:43:09 PM »
i have an old remington 512 .22LR ive completly polished and buffed except for the last 8" of the barrel (the action end wont fit in the lathe and the barrel wont reach all the way through) havent come up with a solution for that yet except do it by hand like the rest of it hahah  >:( i disassembled the bolt and cleaned it thouroughly and polished the visible surfaces. prolly hasnt been apart since 1939 when it was made. my question is can i reassemble the bolt or do i need to leave it apart to be hot blued?
thanks in advance TEDDY

Many tinmes the bolts were left bright (polished) and the rest was blued. If you want all blued I'd leave the bolt disassembled.

i considered that option but i was worried about rust, besides i think a matching blued bolt would be awsome. i as gona have a local guy do the blueing for $60 but theres a guy in NY www.precisionbluing.com that does the polishing and blueing for $165 apparently does a good job. whats says you on price? still will check with my local guy he can prolly do the same thing cheaper i imagine. but its hard to let some one else do it when you see this guys results already.

I would note that the cost of chipping has to be included in the price.. I'd guess $15-25 each way.. You could cold blue it yourself or even do a rust blue although that takes a lot more work..but not much cash..

the bolt must be blued APART, then re-assembled-the firing pin and springs don't need blued

if not, the bluing salts will creep/ooze out over many months and ruin the blue job

hot blued parts MUST be rinsed well prior to reassembly

goes like this:

hot blue tank
hot water rinse
clean motor oil tank dip
wipe dry and clean
