Killer cannon/grenade
« on: July 04, 2011, 03:28:59 PM »
This is an auction ad listing a "cannon" it actually is a grenade waiting for that odd day
when someone over loads it to kill or maim........ we read about these all the time after the fact
here is one just waiting...... the owner posted his phone number in the auction I am calling him
and asking him to destroy this thing before he has a lawsuit on his hands and the memory of either killing or maiming someone.

"This is a very nice black powder naval signal cannon made in the likeness of a ships deck cannon in the era of sail.  The cannon has a 13 inch steel barrel with a brass sleeve. The cannon has a 3/4 inch diameter bore.  The piece is 6 inches hub to hub and 5 inches in height.  The cannon weighs approximately 5 pounds.  This cannon is mounted on a wood platform with wooden wheels in the spirit of old naval cannons.  The barrel has been threaded and sealed professionally.  I have fired this cannon and it is the loudest signal cannon we have had!  While this cannon does make an extremely loud noise it is not meant for firing projectiles.  This piece comes with two feet of fuse and a ramrod."

Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Even his idea of "very nice" is hard to credit.  Looks like something a somewhat below averagely talented 6th grader would cobble together from parts found in the garage.

Good that you found it and took the time to call.

A prime example of a BOMB!

The only reason mine didn't explode (the one's I made in H.S.) was that I was using crude home-made blackpowder.

The auction house should be warned!

He sells that crap on eBay all the time.  A lot of times it is copper pipe and fittings.  Same guy every time.

He describes that everything is made "in the spirit of". Methinks he was hitting the spririts while making it. Lets see here: It's not made to shoot a projo. Wanna bet that whoever buys one of these is going want to stuff it with powder and ball and make a big noise. Yupper, it's a bomb waiting to happen!!!!!    :( :(

Hope he takes the auction down.

I almost wonder if it wouldn't be worth someone purchasing it to prevent it from falling into anyones hands. However, it may promote him to make more.... good luck on convincing him not to sell.... seriously

It would almost be worth it to buy it, arrange a small, um, malfunction with a minor injury so you could sue eBay for allowing garbage like this to be sold through them.  Almost.

Well I am hoping he will do the right thing the next step is the auction site
the reason I am trying to do this with the seller is every time stuff like this
happens they decide that they must lawyer up and make things safer for everyone
so next there will be no signal cannon on the auction site...... I hope he pulls it.

Update I had the auction in my watch list and he ended it. score one for US!

I think you guys are being a little too hard on this guy. That there is some fine 8th grade engineering ;D! I built something like that back in my 8th grade shop class, with out my shop teacher knowing about it.  I took it to a buddy's house and we opened up some shotgun shells to get to the powder and used a fishing weight for a projectile. We had a long fuse in it and after we lit the thing we ran and hid behind the barn. Thank God we did for after about the 5th shot she blew up! This guy is a real class act! KABAR2 I hope he does!

I have had one in my hands made very much like this, except...no carriage, instead, it was mounted on a frame and designed to be put in gopher tunnels, with a hair trigger...to kill gophers, of course. Problem was, out of the tunnel, it looked so interesting that people wanted to shoot it to see how it worked! Not good! I told the owner how truly dangerous that thing was, but to my knowledge, he never disassembled it. It was about 15 years old at the time, had been used a number of times, and I'm pretty sure it could rupture or explode with only a few more usages.... :-\  BoomLover

Good old 12 gauge shells, they were the source of components for most of my young experiments. A seemingly huge pile of powder and shot all in one neat package. It's amazing my fingers survived my childhood. That guys "cannon" is way more high tech than anything my friends and I ever had in our arsenals. We were lucky to never had a serious accident.

Out of curiosity, how much was the seller asking for this "cannon"? It could possibly make a great birthday gift for my mother in law. ;-)

Yes he does. And has had several previously.  We have actually discussed his work previously on here, and somebody even contacted him then too.

Someone needs to buy one of his creations, overload it to the point of failure and then sue him so he gets the idea.

I certainly couldn't be the buyer because I have too much knowledge of the product, but someone else who doesn't post here could do it.  But even if he won the suit, his legal fees should get his attention.

Mike is right, it was Forward Observer that originally brought this indivdual to our attention.
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,226609.msg1099253871.html#msg1099253871
He contacted this seller and the person did the same thing he did with KABAR, he pulled the item, waited for a period of time, and then relisted it. In my opinion this person is not going to stop selling these "future accidents" until someone or something forces him to. Ebay's policy prohibits the sale of anything that goes boom using gunpowder, so all that is necessary is to calmly contact ebay with this seller's name and the item number of the bomb he's currently selling, and report him. IIRC the second offense results in being suspended for a given length of time, and the third can result in being permanently banned. I contacted ebay directly back then, and Kabar did the same now, so let's see what happens. The reason I'm suggesting to do this in a cool, calm, and collected manner is because I don't want to provide the liberal owners of ebay with any ammunition that could in any way help them with their anti-gun agenda.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Thing to do here is for multiple people to email him letting him know that his unsafe garbage has been called to his attention and it is known that he still continues to offer said junk for sale. The basis of any future legal liability will stem on him knowing that a potential unsafe condition may have existed. Ebay's little inteligence cup overflows, it is beyond their means to figure him and his junk out. This is going to result in all cannon, cannon look a likes, toys etc. being banned from their site.

How bout we buy one, shoot it to failure safely from a bunker, photograph the end result and send that to eBay.  Considering their new policy, we'd even likely get our money back. A picture is worth 1000 emails.
