..... This is going to result in all cannon, cannon look a likes, toys etc. being banned from their site.
I hope not. There are some good ones on there too. This one guy definitely needs to go.

I respectfully disagree with the opinion that reporting this ne'er-do-well is going to cause the execs at ebay to go on a witch hunt, but if it does then so be it; Mike, you said it, it's time to realize that this person has got to be made to stop selling this dangerous junk. I "reported a listing violation" again last night, all it takes is knowing the item number.

I think a large number of people reporting issues would actually encourage them to allow similar items. The fact that there are watchdogs would signal it is a popular category and people that are involved care about safety which will help protect eBay.

I sent in a complaint the other day to ebay on the specific cannon/bomb.  Their automation system isn't built to take into consideration but just the few things they could think of and itemize.

I viewed this guy's "feedback profile" earlier today, and he sold his first (on ebay) pipe bomb on Feb. 16th of this year, so far he's sold 14 of them gaining a total of $925.15 (not including shipping fees). That's 14 unsuspecting people who are now the proud owners of a "very nice black powder signal cannon." This swell guy also provides two feet of fuse along with the purchase, just so these novice cannon enthusiasts can get started on their newfound hobbies a little quicker. This really is a nasty situation.

DD,
KABAR already did that, and so did Forward Observer, I don't think this individual is going to stop of his own accord.
His phone number and email address are all right there on his ebay listings, he hails from Fort Worth, Texas.

So what do we do to protect our hobby from this type person and the fall out when someone loses an arm, leg, or a life?  or better yet what can we do?

Another option:

I don't know how many people read ebay feedback on a seller prior to buying something;
but if you buy something from a person on ebay,
you can leave a negative feedback message in their account that can't be erased.

It isn't a great remedy, but it will burn them somewhat.

The only way to dodge negative feedback would be to start a new account,
and lose all your history.
With that being done, lots of folks won't buy from anyone with a real low number of transactions.

I think the next step will be to get in contact with someone (a real talking head) at ebay, and then do the best job possible in trying to convince them just how dangerous the items this seller is peddling there are.

Buy one, blow it up, and mail the pieces to eBay. I will contribute money to that effort.

I can not do the blowing up part as I live in a housing development on less than one acre. I suppose I could dig a hole and lay steel over it but somebody rural would be better suited.

I don't think you will have much luck with Ebay as there are many "grenades" sold there by different people.  If they do anything at all, it may be to no longer allow any salute cannon sales at all on their site.

I understand the safety concern but is the guy getting a fair shake ? He offers its not for a projo only noise . I have seen up to 4 inch steel pipe with a cap either welded ( larger pipe) or threaded on with a hole drilled in the end used as a cannon . A 4 inch one about 12 ft long when filled with a good rag for a wad and about 5-7 lbs of rock and powered with oxy-act mix of gas would send the load about 400 yards or more. A 2.5 inch one would send a full can of coke a good distance also.
His offering also reminds me of the guns used for waterfowl in Maryland and Va. where a piece of pipe was used to shoot up to a pound and a half of both shot and powder. A drilled out grease fitting was used as the nipple and hit with a hammer.
I don't know if the brass linner is sealed and the pipe and fittings are for strength or just what his construction is or what his load is so to claim unsafe with out knowing might be unfair. We also don't have a clue as to the ASME or ASTM rating on the pipe and fittings . There fore we don't know the pressure the set up will hold up to. Would it not be better to request these facts before judgement ?

But we need someone in Texas to do this who has had a recent face-through-the-winshield accident and some fresh scars therefrom...  The stage is then set for a state-filed suit to put this bad boy out of business permanently.

SHOOTALL,
Yes he is getting exactly what he deserves I just hope he does not reap what he sows....... go back through the old posts and you will find reports of cannon mishaps most are with thin wall cannons made at home with pipe. It is one thing for the uninformed to build something that injures or kills them it is another when someone builds them and sells it for a profit uncaring about the possible results. If the uninformed load smokeless powder in it the results are disaster if the uninformed overload with black powder the results are disaster. As a member of the forum I can not let this stand allowing him to profit from something that could kill or maim cannot be allowed.  I intend to contact ATFE with his name and info informing them of the danger he is causing for profit and let them slap him up side the head. enough is enough.

So he states its for noise and black powder and you feel the uninformed are enough to sic the ATF on him because they might abuse it ? Stupid people blow up guns quite often should all guns be outlawed because of the stupid people ? Should hand loading be banned because people make mistakes or hot rod and blow up guns ?  I talked to a guy at the gun show sat that still shoots his twist bbl shotgun with remington target loads .
What do you expect the ATF to do ? Are black powder noise cannons restricted ?

He is manufacturing an unsafe product for profit if this was a rifle or shotgun you would be the first to condem a manufacturer if they knowingly produced an unsafe product. I sir have a degree in gunsmithing I have built cannons for my own use, I would never knowingly build something that could put someone at risk. HE HAS BEEN TOLD HIS CANNON ARE UNSAFE. Therefore he continues with the knowledge that he could at some point kill or injure someone... I really have to question why you are defending someone who is indangering the public welfare? I have no problem with people manufacturing a safe product for profit but this is not the case.

O.k. Some education is in order .... First we do not build cannon out of brass - Brass is a metal known to be brittle under repeated firings it WILL FAIL. we build cannons out of BRONZE it is the accepted metal for cannons, water pipe weather steel or brass is not rated to say 70,000 psi as a piece of 1018 round stock would be, water pipe is welded it has a seam therefore it can fail at it's weakest point. brass fittings..... most of what I have seen in the big chain home do-it-yourself centers buy from the lowest bidder ie: China.... I have worked with these fittings if you tighten them two much they will crack if they crack from tightening them do you really want to trust them to withstand say 20 or 30 grains of fffg black powder well packed with some news paper? As to punt guns yes some were made of pipe but most are better made than that, heck you can even find examples of Moro cannon made from gas pipe wrapped with wire they were made by people wanting to kill others and used what was at hand to do it, would you want to fire one of these? If you would take the time to read up on cannon construction and read about the accidents caused by these pipe bombs you would hopefully realize that those here discussing this problem child know from which they speak.

First of all black steel pipe is not water pipe Galv. would be water pipe . second there are at several types of steel pipe that is not ERW or seemed as you stated in fact most rated for fuel gas is not ERW. And incase you are not aware there are still fittings made in America and will be as long as they are required to be used on military bases and other govt. work. Nither you nor I know what or how the liner was fabricated either from bar stock or pipe. If you have  a working knowlege of these fittings showing you would see they were mallerable and streach not crack like cast ones do.

1st day of vacation and I was getting ready to go to the range this morning when a severe thunderstorm changed my plans. Well, it gave me the time to try contacting someone at ebay by phone (quite a trip just finding the number). I should have known better, I found myself in a maze of recorded messages, and just plain BS, so I gave up. Instead I found a section in customer support, where you can report a member and/or items to an ebay agent, so I sent a detailed email listing the three brass pipe bombs this guy currently has listed, and the 14 past sales that include both steel and brass pipe bombs. I didn't mince any words in describing what I thought about this seller's product, or the hazards that buyers could be facing if they try to fire them.
My suggestion would be to wait on taking any further action for a few days, just to see what kind of response they give.

Ok I checked out this site.... he is casting his cannon solid and boreing them... from the overall design it looks like a good solid cannon I have sent an inquiry as to weather he is casting in brass or bronze I have seen many times they say brass when they mean bronze.
And just for grins&giggles.... This came from a reference commonly used in the hydraulic industry and were stated for ASTM A53 welded and seamless pipe. 1/2" ASTM A53 grade B type S and ASTM A106 grade B schedule 40 2600 psi.  Now 1018 steel =70,000 psi vs 2600 psi....Hmmm a differnce of 67,400 psi ..... which would you choose for your next black powder project???
