Next Huntsman question - projectiles
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:00:42 AM »
I understand the Huntsman has a 1 in 56 inch twist rate.  That is a little faster then my 50 cal. RB BP rifles which have a 1 in 66 twist.

I thought about round balls, Lee R.E.A.L. bullets, Lyman Maxi bullets and even my 45 Colt bullet: a 250 gr. FBRNFP sized .452.

Will the 1-56 stabilize a bullet in the 250 gr. range?  What do y'all shoot?

Richard,

I don't have a 45 MZ, yet, but that slow twist would be best suited for shorter/lighter bullets.  Your 1:66 twist smokepole would be a "round ball" twist and bullets don't get no shorter than that.  FWIW if you try the Lee REAL bullets you better get a ramrod from Mr. Hubbard as those projectiles can take a bit of force to load.  I just bought some 45 cal MZ conicals and they are sized at .451" so your .452" bullets should work.  It's like any other gun you got to try the bullet/powder combo and see if it works.

BTW, isn't an inline muzzle loader considered a modern firearm for Georgia?  I thought you folks were still hunting with spears?  ;D

Spears!?   ???   Heck, we got so many a them critters down here we just heard 'em into a slaughter pen and kill 'em Kosher style!   ;D

I wasn't thinkin a huntin with this thing no ways...  I hunt with a Southern Mountain Rifle I built.  Sidelock dontchaknow...  8)

I think I'll try and see if I can get that 250 gr. .452 RNFP cast from pure lead to load streight on a few trips to the range.  I'll lube it with my Gatefou BP Lube.  It'll be a good test for me, the rifle in general and the twist in particular.   ;)

Hey Kurt!

The ramrod got here yesterday!  It's great, thanks a million!  You're a pal!   ;D

I'm kind of disappointed with the rate of twist.  I was thinking of playing with long, heavy conicals with my first in-line...  :(

Oh well, what with rebuilding, refinishing and load development this ol' girl got hours of playin around fun left in her!   ;D   I'm sure I'll be askin for all y'all's input!   ;)

Thank's again Kurt!   :D

Has anybody tried a sabot in a .45 Cal?  Could I load a .44 cal bullet sized to .431 in one?

Richard,

You can buy sabots for a 45 cal MZ.  The ones I have seen are sized for a 40 cal. bullet.  Hornady makes a 45 cal bullet/sabot combo as well as other manufacturers.  Bullet weights are in the 180 to 200 grain range.  I have no idea how these sabots would perform in your 1:56 twist gun.  I think the Huntsman manual is posted in one of the Stickys on this forum, might be a place to start for bullet/powder load info.  Scatch that idea, the posted manual is for the latest version of the Huntsman.  There is a link in that thread to obtain a manual for your older 45 cal. Huntsman but I don't know if it has load data.

Good Luck
