The "old" .45-70 never died, and in fact has been a favorite of Bear guides in Alaska all along, or at least since winchester
and Marlin have made lever action guns.
And yeah, they do have a trajectory like a rainbow, but that don't mean squat at 100 yards or under, where that big
fat bullet just wreaks havoc on whatever it hits.*grins*

Dave, you can't do better than that for starters!!  Where are you located?  Judging from the way you're dressed in May, it's about as tropical as it is here on the frigid U.P. of Michigan.  It's a real thrill to put a load together and have it really work.  Ya gotta love that .45-70.....I do mine.

Thank you for all the positive comments. The load was...Remington Brass, CCI 200 primer, 35 grn IMR4198, topped off with a 405 gr Remington soft point. Not a hot load by any means. I had tried some loads with up to 43grn of 4198 and it just wasn't that much fun to shoot. ;)  The 35 grains gave a decent velocity with tight groups at a hundred yards, and the bear didn't care that my shoulder wasn't sore afterward! Bullet entered tight behind the right front shoulder, puntured both lungs and nicked the heart, and came out a ways back on the left side. Bear was quartering toward me a bit. You can see the exit wound in the pic. As to the location, North Idaho.

Congratulations Dave!  I like 4198 in 45/70 too, used to reload cast 400 grainers for my dad's Trapdoor Springfield back in dinosaur days.
You making a rug out of him?  How does spring bear taste?

Sorry guys, I had originally posted my load at 43 grains of IMR4198. The load was 35 grains of 4198. I fixed my other post as well. Huge difference in these two loads so I wanted to clarify. 35 grains is a nice mellow load that kisses your shoulder and hits like a freight train on the receiving end. (knocked that bear sideways into a tree) 43 grains will punish you, but I still kinda like it.
