If you were going to buy one 30-30 mould
« on: July 11, 2011, 02:27:44 PM »
If you could buy only one mold and was  interested in accuracy which mould would you buy?  The guns will be a winnie model 94 and a marlin 336 and a 308 bolt gun.  This is for target work from 50 to 200 yards with the only thing to be lost is my self respect and who will have to buy the beer when we are done shooting.   Thanks SN

+2 on the Ranch Dog mould. That bullet flat out works!

Ranch Dog has a nice 30-30 mould If I hadn't already purchased the Lee 170 gr. gas check mold I'd probably get one.   The Lee mold works great in my Sav. pump 30-30 for both plinking with no gas check loads to full house gas checked hunting loads so I don't see any point in getting another mold.

I tumble lube the no gas check plinkers and Ranch Dip and size the gas check hunting loads.

Thanks for the replies/help.  I looked at the ranchdog link,  made by lee sorta scared me.  But I bet some of you are more demanding shooters than I am  so that gives it merit. Casting 6 at a throw would be nice as well.    Anyone kind eneogh to tell me what kind of accuracy you are getting at 100 yards with this combo and which powder you prefer?
Larry I got access thru my dad to a 311291 so I will barrow and try some.  I am a bit recoil shy but that bullet in a friends 30-06 loaded with 15 grains of unique seemed pretty nice on accuracy and recoil.  Thanks for thje help.  SN

The LBT Flat Nose would work well in a lever gun. I admit to some bias but I like Veral Smith's molds a lot.

I have a Lyman mold that I like for the .30-30 and all my other .30's.  It's a flat point mold around 170 grains.  I'd have to go dig it out to give you the number.  I'm feeling a bit lazy at the moment or I would...

 311291 or rcbs's or saeco's equivilant.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I appreciate the input.   Looks like I got a mold to try out and then one buy.

Instead of buying moulds go to someplace like www.montanabulletworks.com and buy a selection of different bullets to try, then buy the mould for the bullet your rifle liked best.

I have that one also. I really like it for .30 caliber rifles. I have a couple of old Lee two cavity moulds I doubt I'll ever cast with again but I have them anyway. I think one is around 180 the other a 200 grain.

I have a .30 caliber Lee mold that tosses .307 bullets even after polishing.  I've had this mold for a very long time so calling Lee won't help.  I'm going to try lapping it out larger for my 7.7mm Arisaka. If I `F' it up so be it, no great loss.  I find that about 20% of my Lee molds are a pain in the butt and the rest are great.

I'll still be using my Lyman mold for all my other .30's...

I use a LBT 170 lcfn in my levers, but, you cant go wrong with Veral's 160 fp either. If you don't want to go that route the Lyman or RCBS flat points in the weight of your choice are the best alternative. If you can get a Lee mold for free, (don't lay down good money for one), wait for the price of aluminum to go up and cash it in with your aluminum cans. No I don't like Lee nor, there pompous CEO whose arrogence has also rubbed off on his staff. CRASH87

I have the Lyman 311291 and it is a good 30-30 bullet. I need to seat it just a bit deeper than the vrimp grooves in my 30-30’s but the Lee factory crimp die works fine.
You are in the best of all positions, new to casting and without a mold. If you are buying only 1 mold take a look at the LBT catalog and order Verals lever-action mold. This is the mold I would like to have for my 307 Winchester.

Either RCBS 180 FP, or the afore mentioned 311291. Actually, I already own one of each, and feel no need for anything different for 30-30.
