I was really young when Granny Rex made homemade soap, she wouldent let me close to see really how she did it but it always stuck with me how they made it, Shes now long sinced passed and I still hadent seen how its made till I found this Blog and this family gets er done. so if your curiouse to see....Yes see how its made I'll show ya.

granny never did that to me (I was a perfect child) but todays debutantes would never let that stuff touch their hands.

Nephew's dogs LOVE that stuff, so I give 'em each a bar every time I go over there.
I've caught catfish using it for bait, too. At least it beats cod liver oil.

I haven't made soap in way too many years, but I enjoyed it. Commonly called lye soap. Rub it on a stain on your shirt, etc, then wash, stain gone. You could shave it into the washer for laundry soap. I never found anything that would get me any cleaner and it was good for my scalp too. I made some using part lard and part some butter a friend gave me to try that was getting a bit rancid. I thought, why not, they make coco butter soap. HEH. Couldn't really smell it til you got it wet after it cured. Wash up with it and it stunk like a baby had thrown up on you. Never did that again. I wish I could find the LEWIS LYE again, haven't seen any in many years. POWDERMAN.

Used to take a tub bath with it as a child to relieve itch of poison ivy and chiggers (red bugs). Would also cut tobacco gum off our hands when we came out of the fields.

REX. Thanks for those links, very interesting. I'll try a farm supply store, theres a tsc about 30 miles from here. I used to try to flavor the soap, give it a scent, never did work though. I embedded rose petals in the lard a few days, tried adding lemon scents, even stirred with a sassafrass stick to no avail. I have a terrible itching from allergies, my scalp is the worst and want to try some real lye soap again. Have no idea where I can buy a bar so I reckon I'll have to make it myself if I can find some lye. Anybody have a bar to sell?? No scented or fancy stuff, just soap?? POWDERMAN.

Yep when we came to lunch & dinner there would be several metal wash pans set up with lye soap to cut tobacco gum off your hands and arms , the shirt and pants were gonners in most cases .

I never used homemade lye soap, although my wife says she recalls using some which her Granny made regularly (she was Penn-Dutch).
I do recall the issue GI soap of 50 years ago..pretty much the same stuff, I believe.

I shower with lye soap as I'm allergic to the perfume and such in factory made..Don't wanta pay the steep tariff on allergy free soap!

I make lye soap in a blender. It ain't hard at all, and makin it in a blender you can make a bunch in short order. Lye and animal fat, or olive oil, whatever. There's all kinds of combos.

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but for those in search of lye, it's sold in granulated, 100% form in the hardware store as drain cleaner.

where do you get r.d. lye anymore ?
i was told where i used to buy it that
it wasn't sold anymore because the
dopers used it for making their wares.

me and my granny used to make lye soap all
the time when she was living. best thing
in the world to get the chiggers off your
hide. still have a couple left from the last
batch i made.

My mother in law made it and set in on the sinks and in the tub, If you wanted store bought soap you had to bring your own.

Ranger I haven't checked in a few years so I don't know. I bought it at a grocery store that has been there since the fifties. Maybe check on line, or leach it out of wood ashes if all else fails. The old fashioned way?

i noticed while trying to find a container
of lye to boil some traps in that it was
absent from the shelf everywhere i went.
i asked at the last 2 places i went and
got told that it wasn't sold anymore because
of the dopeheads using it to make something
or the other, kinda like trying to buy cold
medicine.
at least i still have some of the last
batch of soap i made. i've been hoarding
that for use on chigger bites.

In Kansas, I can walk into the Ace Hardware store and find this product on the shelf. I use it for soap and it's about $2 a pound.

We had several boxes of home made soap up in the garage, my dork brother decided it took up space, but the genuine bailing wire is still there, and burned it.

I found out when I went up to get some for laundry some years back.

As mentioned in the link in the op, all soap is lye soap. All the big commercial soaps add colors and scents, but remove most or all the glycerin that is produced by the saponification of fats or oils by the lye. My daughter makes and sells soap but she adds essential oils to add odor to most of them but does not remove the glycerin. Adds menthol to one as a sinus soap, activated carbon to another to make acne soap. I have not asked her, but she might be willing to make a plain soap with no additives. https://naturalstatesoap.com/ Not give as a solicitation to buy, but as a reference for some versions that are available. Since the covid pandemic started, she has not been making near so much.

When I worked in the kitchen at the college cafateria bakery, we used lye soap for washing the baking pans and pie pans.

I'm surprised tha it wasn't myself who did that !

Anyway, although we never made soap at home, my wife said her granny did. For lye, the old timers somehow used wood ashes.
I clearly remember th old G.I. soap we used in the Army. I wonder if the military still uses that stuff? Guess I'll have to check with some recent "graduates"! Or if there is a recent veteran here on GBO..please let us know if it is still used.
