Ruger Porn
« on: July 12, 2011, 11:39:05 AM »
I don't have many Rugers but I'll start this anyway.
Top, late model 45 Colt with Birdseye maple grips that I made.
Center, 1965 3 screw .357mag with elk antler grips by http://www.stag-grips.com/
Bottom, 1971 Bearcat.  I should have turned the Bearcat over, the left panel is finger groove and thumb rest.

Hi Bill it's been awhile since I've seen a post by you. How is the world treating you and Deb these days?

At the moment I only have a pair of Ruger revolvers but have another on the way that I'll bring home Thursday. I'll try to get all three posed for a photo then.

Bill, we're good, busy but good.  You, I'm sure, have noticed that it seems that the months and years are starting to seem like weeks and months.   ;)

I'll be looking forward to seeing the pistols,  I only have 1 other pistol, a Mkll 22 and will try to get it on later in the week.  I like picture threads, that way I get to drool with out making a mess or costing money!  LOL!

Give Faye a big Hug for me, good to see you still hanging in there.

Nice set of tools there pard.

Not a very good picture of them, but here's three more... all old model Rugers.

1971 Super Bearcat 22LR w/Hawaiian Koa by David Wayland.
1969 Single Six 22MAG only w/Stag by Boone (maybe), don't remember.
1972 Blackhawk 357MAG w/Mexican Rosewood by David Wayland.

SWEET!!   I had a late 60's single six a long time ago, was stolen, I had the extra cylinder until just a few years ago when we had a house fire.
Thanks for the picture! And the reminder!  I guess I need to edit mine to add grips.

I'm a sucker for case hardened SAA's!
What is the ported stainless?  More about those sights if you get a minute.
You still got that Freedom Arms?  That was a sweet pistol!

It's a Magna-port Predator custom Bill. I won it at the last Annual Handgun Hunt at Whiteoak. They had been holding it for 15 years or so I think. I go once and they discontinue it and sell off the place. I think the sights are called C-more not sure if spelled that way.

The other one is a limited run Single six frame in .32 H&R Magnum. I wish I'd held on to it as it would be an ideal little gun for my youngest grandson. He likes to "pow" papa Bill's guns when he comes down.

He's already learned to always ask before touching gun and to wait for me to check to be sure it's not loaded. He knows how to check most of my guns but he's not strong enough to do it by himself. He'll be four next month and already loves guns as much as me.

And with your reminder I went back and edited in who made my grips on the above pictured.   David Wayland was an exceptional grip maker in Mill Valley, CA who made a lot of SA sets for me for my Colts and Rugers.   I'd tear down and send him the grip frames for a perfect fit.   He's long since retired, and may have passed by now as he was "up there" when he did mine close to 20 years ago.   Boone in Brinnon, WA did some ivory sets for me many years ago, but for my Colt's, and I think some stag (although Eagle and a couple others also did stag for me).

That SSM would be the ticket for a young shooter coming up Bill.    But both the SSM and the Predator are missing a screw for my tastes.    ;)

Would take a lot of pictures to show all the SA's I no longer have, even just the Rugers.    Have had a "few" old model Rugers over the years, a Blackhawk Flattop 44 Buntline, a bunch of Blackhawks with multiples in all calibers and barrel lengths, a couple of early Bearcats, the Super Bearcat, an early Single Six Buntline (not a convertable), the Single Six 22MAG, maybe others I'm forgetting and several Super Blackhawk 7.5's and 10.5's (the only new models I've owned).

Only other pictures I found easily of ones I no longer own is a couple of old model Blackhawks, probably taken when I got them as they still wear factory grips.   A 357 MAG and 41 MAG I think, and both 4 5/8" (my favorite length for the Blackhawks).    I'll have to dig to see if I have pictures of any others.

Here are some not so great photos of the two newest ones I've picked up lately.

And the BH .45 Colt with 5.5" barrel also.

You still got that Freedom Arms?  That was a sweet pistol!

Bill I just noticed this and that I had failed to respond.

I honestly don't recall for sure which FA I brought when we visited with you but I think it might have been the FA83 .454 Casull. If so then no I had to ship it back to Freedom Arms or buy it and I didn't have the funds to buy it at the time.

Now it might have been an FA97 in .45 Colt which I also don't still have or an FA83 in .44 Magnum which I do still have. I wish I had held onto the .45 Colt and if I had then I'd not have bought the Ruger BH .45 Colt recently.

Bill, was the 45 Colt.   I've never shot a Bisley, in fact, I don't think I've ever handled one.  I've always thought the 44 Spl. was an interesting calibre.  My daughter has a 44mag marlin and I've shot a bit of the Spl's through it and thought they would be awesome in a pistol.  I guess great minds think alike,  ;)    I picked up a 45 Colt just like yours just a few months ago.   I have a custom clone of the RCBS 45 270 SWC mold that the pistol truly shines with when they're loaded to the 1200fps range.
Thanks for postin', looking forward to your report on the 44 Spl.

My pick of the litter BF Bill... how can you not like stag on a SA?   One of the nice things about the OM BH's and SS's is the grips are interchangeable, so I have extras and used what fit my mood at the time - be it one of the woods, stag or ivory.  ;D

I really like your SBH a lot Bigeasy.   I thought about doing similar to one of my SBH's, just never got around to it before I sold them all.   Would have been a real treat to carry all those years hiking/climbing the back country of the Rockies instead of packing the 7 1/2's (and even the 10 1/2 sometimes).

I also like your new Bisley GB Bill.   Always liked the 44SPL cartridge, enough so that one on my CCW revolvers for years was chambered for it.

Found a bunch more pictures of firearms I no longer have, but none are of the Ruger SA's.

I would LOVE to have ivory for my pistolas!  I just can't bring myself to spend $600 for grips to put on a $400 gun.  :'(   I do think that I may try a set of the "TruIvory" grips, from what I can tell by internet pictures, they look ok.

The cost of upgrades/accessories verses the cost of a firearm doesn't matter much to me if they are something I want.   I learned a very long time ago that waiting for something because of it's cost usually meant never having it to enjoy, so I mended my thinking, stopped waiting and bought what I wanted when I wanted it.

I got my ivory and stag grips a long time ago, and for the era at not that high of cost as far as I was concerned when compared to the cost of the firearms.   So I had several sets for the Colt's and several for the Rugers and some other revolvers and pistols.    The company I got most of mine from still offers SA elephant ivory grips for $425-$475 depending on grade, and bone for $275.   With what the SA's cost now days that is certainly reasonable IMO.

I also have a couple of faux ivory sets for the old model Rugers that look fine and are far more tolerant to bumps and bruises than ivory is.   They go back far enough that I don't remember who made them though.

Ladobe-
The SBH originally had the standard round trigger grip frame.  Always liked the feel of the square back dragoon style, so changed it out.  A nice sized packin revolver that feels good in the hand.

Butler Ford / Ratdog-
I purchased the elk stocks on the Bearcat off ebay, and don't remember the maker, but they are not that much, like $75.00 or so.  The Bearcat is just as accurate as the full sized single six's, just harder to shoot accurately do to the lighter weight and smaller grips.  The fixed sights are not as sharp as the adjustable sights on the bigger gun, but work well once you find a load that is accurate and shoots to the point of aim (CCI Mini Mags in this case).

I picked this one up at the Fort Worth Gun Show today.  It a 60th Anniversary New Model Vaquero in .45 Colt with a January, 2010 date of manufacture.  It has light engraving on the cylinder, custom grips, and a gold band around the rear of the cylinder.

Just bought the one I knew I wanted and love it.  ;)  I'm gunning to get some others to try at some point, but thus far, the .45 convertible in 5.5" does everything I want except concealed carry.  I'd LOVE to help you with some of yours if that's what yer offerin though.  ;)  Honestly, my next handgun purchase is already lined up for the end of the year and I get about 1 or 2 guns a year.  Limited budget with daughter in middle school...  My new pistol this year was my EAA Tanfoglio Match in .45 acp and I love it too.  Going to be doing some local plate/pin shoots with it.
