375 H&H most common load
« on: July 13, 2011, 04:44:55 AM »
What do you figure is the most common load being used for the 235 grain Spitzer?

And for the 270 grain spitzer?

I'm not trying to max it out - just get a good mid-range load that is accurate and reasonable to shoot.

I chased 4064 from 63 to 70 grains with the 235 in a Ruger #1 and did not get a good group at 100y.  Not sure if the gun doesn't like the 235, the 4064, the combinations, the gun has issues, or it's me.  It's new to me so I don't have other loads to compare yet, and no factory ammo.  I did shoot one starting load with 3031, and it was better, so I have a ways to go...

It would be nice to try the gun using a very common load that is known for good accuracy.

Thanks!

Tacotime,

I get sub moa with H4895 at a velocity of 2427 FPS with 3072 Foot Pounds of energy. with the 235 grain Speer.  This load groups as small as .608 inch with the average being .774 inch for all groups tested at 100 yards.   This is a great deer load and it is a mild load per the loading manuals just over 70 grains of powder and 4 grains below maximum.

I also get less than 1 inch groups with 270 grain cast bullets using IMR3031,velocity 2193 FPS and 2901 Foot Pounds of energy.

H4895 is my choice also with the 270 grain jacketed bullets, velocity 2621 FPS and 4118 Foot Pounds of energy.

The largest group shot with my rile has been 1.103 inch using a cast bullet.  It is extremely accurate and easy to load for.

This is with a 1917 Enfield Action with a 24 inch Shaw Barrel.

Great choice of caliber for anything in North America.

Thanks.  I think I'll try the H4895 here.  I like the 2400fps area.

Looks like you and me are the only .375 shooters here...

+ another for H4895 with the lighter weight .375 bullets.  With the 270 - 285 gr bullets my M70 prefers Varget.

I've never shot 235 grainers in mine but RL-15 has worked very well with 270 and 300 gr. bullets.  The pictured groups were shot with a handgun but the loads shoot as well in a rifle.

Now you're making me feel bad since you said those were from a pistol.

I'll check the H4895.

Probably try the 270's again too.  Now that I look back, the 270 shot fair with 63 grains of 4064, but there was a flyer.  Maybe that was me or poor brass prep.  But since adding a grain or two then shot worse, I scratched 4064, but I'll retry that.  Not tried RL15 yet but plan to.

The 3031 light load for 270gr by Parker seems interesting. Wonder what grains were used...

Thanks.

Tacotime,

The IMR3031 light load was 56 grains behind a Eaton 270 grain cast bullet.  Velocity 2193, Energy 2901,  group sizes .910 and 1.103

This load is 11 grains below the maximum load in my loading manual with the 270 grain bullet, I don't try to push cast bullets to the same velocity level as jacketed bullets.

:)   We never used the 235 grain Speer, but for 270's and 300's, we usually found IMR 4350  produced accurate loads..it was I believ e one of Keith's favorites for this caliber.....

Seems like I-4350 and Varget show up in just about every load table, but I have yet to use either.  I think I have every other powder made but them!

Hauled out all my old data.  I was under the spell of VhitaVouri powders in my 375 days, used 74 gr of N 140 with the 270 gr Barnes monolithic solid for 2700 fps, killed a Buff in Zimbabwe with it.  A little hot but no sign of trouble.  That was the gold colored bullet, may not be available today.  Used 68 gr N 150 with some recovered 300 Gr Remington FMJs for 2440 fps, one of the old factory rounds gave 2512, the ones I knocked down averaged 68.1 gr of a stick powder.  With the 300 gr Hornady SP that load gave me 2475 one day and 2505 another day, just a few tested.  The Hornady 300 gave 2445 with 68 gr N150, a pretty good test.

With the 265 gr cast gas check, I tried 45 gr IMR 3031 for around 1850 and 44gr of my Dad's very old Hi Vel for 1835.  I carried those on deer hunts a few times in heavy timber but never got one.
