 I've got a very simple CVA Sidelock ML in.54 cal sitting in my gun safe for some time.  I don't have much use for it being a southpaw. When that cap goes off it is to close to my eye for comfort. :o
 
Most ads I see are all now for the In line in 50 cal shooting sabots and pre-formed powder disks. My questions:
 
Can loose powder and non sabot bullets be used in these rifles.
 
 Are these non sabot bullets all from pure(soft) lead.
 
Are jacketed bullets available that can be used without a sabot.

loose powder is all you should use in a sidelock muzzle loader.

Depending on what model it is and the twist, you can use patched round balls and conicals. Powerbelts are one of my favorites in the Sidelock if it has  the 1:48 twist or faster.

From your question, I believe you are asking if these things can be used in a modern in line.  If so:  Yes you can use loose powder, and yes, some saboted bullets are soft lead, others are jacketed.  Most use a jhp.  You cannot, to my knowledge use a jacketed bullet without a sabot.  Maybe there is something I don't know of.  You can, however use a conical lead without a sabot, one that fits the bore.  These must of necessity be soft lead.  All are used in different situations effectively.

Thanks Ben, you understood my questions.
Those powder wafers ( Pyrodex etc) come in 50 gr each. Is that 50 grain/volume or actually 50 gr scale weight?

They are 50 gr. Volume equivalent.  There are also some 30 gr. available.
 
My in line likes 85 gr. loose powder.

pellets arent recommended in a sidelock for obvious reasons.

I had no intentions of using pellets in my sidelock which will stay put in the safe. ;)

I agree with Ben (Mechanic),
Yes, Yes, and No to your questions.
TC gives their Maxi-Balls (non sabot) bullet, as an alternative to the saboted bullet.

BTW, how did you expect the other posters to understand your question? Your writing North of the border English.  ;D
