REASON FOR STUDYING HISTORY OF THECOAST ARTILLERYBefore deciding upon the training that should be given to the CoastArtillery for field service, we should come to some conclusion in regardto the duties that will be required of it. If we were guided only by theexperience of the year 1911, we should conclude that it would never beused outside of the coast defenses otherwise than as infantry; if welooked only to its record in the Civil War, we should say that it wouldbe used in the field only as light or horse artillery; if we were guided bythe discussions that preceded the separation in 1907, we should concludethat it would never be used at all outside of the coast defenses.
