Which MEC Model Do I Have?
« on: July 14, 2011, 06:04:30 PM »
So my brother moved and he had a MEC reloader that he said I could have.  He bought it from a guy 10 years ago and then ended up not using it.  It needs quite a few new parts.  The problem is, I don't know which model it is.

It is a 6 place shellholder, and I'm pretty sure it's manual advance.

What are your thoughts?  I guy at work said to send MEC an email and see what they would say for cost doing a refurb on it.  I'm thinking about it since the reloader was free.

I'm guessing here but it might be an old (really old?) MEC650. As best as I recall the 650 is a progressive of sorts at least and that's what yours appears to be. It's a fair bit different than any of the single stages machines I've owned which include the 600JR, 700 and Sizemaster 77.

I'm on dial-up, so I can only see a couple of pictures. Near as I can tell, it's a MEC 650. You can download the manual from MEC's website.

First generation 650, you would want to add the later primer feed anyway.

The biggest knock on the 650 was (is) that it doesn't resize as a part of the normal reloading sequence. It will resize, providing the die hasn't been lost, but as a seperate operation. That seems to be a big issue for some folks, never was for me. I bought my first 650 in 1969, it's had more'n a few shells through it.

.45 COLT is right! It looks like my 650, and it is a manual advance machine. MEC will have parts, and or rebuild it for you. The manual is available on line and can be downloaded. I bought a MEC Super Sizer, to do the re-sizing when I need to.

It may not need a rebuild. The MECs are pretty long lasting machines. I would give it a good scrubbing first and then some oil and lube in the appropriate places. Replace the crimping dies which aren't a big expense. It may be in better working condition than you think.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I think you're right.  I'll just have to sit down with a parts schematic after I get it cleaned up.  I was just a little unsure since I've never reloaded for shotgun before.

650   does not look like anything missing besides primer feeder(get large capacity) 650 is progressive manual advance, no resizing i shoot o/u so not a problem picked mine up at yard sale little cleaning and lubing works great not pretty but that does not bother me you can pump out a lot more shells than you think w this loader.      late post but hope it helps
