Has any of you ever built a parts kit AK.
« on: July 15, 2011, 10:28:39 AM »
Several years ago I bought some AK parts kit's and several flat receivers.  I never got around to putting it together.  I have been looking for a project so I decided to get everything out and give it a try.  This appears to be a difficult build.  I'm seriously considering doing a a screw build.  I will screw in the rails and the front trunion as I don't have a spot welder or a press.

I've never done one of those but I've read a bit of the Russians problems with AK production. Screws don't sound like a good idea.. A better choice would be rivets. A fairly simple fastening system that tends to stay put. The Russians had quite a few problems with riveted receivers but made changes to make them last better. Of course they were building select fire weapons and that certainly increases the strain on the weapon.. Spot welding would also be a good choice and should be something one could afford to farm out.

I put together several in the early 90's. At the time I worked in a metal fab shop. The receiver has to be right on, no variation in where you bend it. I cut out and notched a few practice pieces to get it perfect before starting on the real thing. I just used the stock rivets and spot welded. But had all the tools available. I think the popular thing on the AK forums now is to use the allen head screws.

I have built or helped others build over 100 back when kits were cheap.

I got my receiver bent yesterday.  It took 4 tries to get it right.  I had 5 rusty flats from about 6 years ago.  I finished about .008 too wide.  The height to both rails are within .010 of wear they are supposed to be.  I think I have a serviceable receiver.  I made my outer die out of 2" angle and my inner die out of 3 pieces of 1.25x.187 flat bar.  I pulled it through the die using 3/8" bolts.  Then I spaced out my flat bar to form an angle to the right dimensions front and back.  Then I began hammering.  It was alot of work.  Now to heat treating and putting the rails in.
