Responding to statements by gungrabbers
« on: July 15, 2011, 12:33:40 PM »
I'll start off by saying that, in my experience, one can never change the mind of a liberal by resorting to the use of facts, logic, or common sense.  Now that that's out of the way, how do you respond to these statements I've heard recently:

Number One..."I think that only the police and the military should be allowed to have guns, and then ONLY when they're on duty."

Number  Two..."Everybody should be required to turn in all their guns, especially the criminals."

Number Three..."If we just had the correct laws in place, the Arizona (Giffords) shootings wouldn't have taken place."

These statements were all made by the same person.

Well I'll tell you right now, were it not for the concealed carry laws I would not carry myself.

I read all the reports and predictions of blood in the streets and road rage and well... I just didn't feel safe any longer. ::)

I got a gun, a really nasty black one. ;)  I carry it all over the place cause I don't feel safe knowing all the gun nuts are carrying. Before they passed carry laws nobody was packing and everyone was safe.

Used to be it was illegal for the bad guys to carry loaded guns, now they have licenses. :-[  I was able to go about my day in happy bliss knowing laws protected me, now I know better, I protect me. Thanks to gun grabbers I can see the world for what it is.

EQ, I carried concealed long before it was legal.  I figured I had the constitution behind me.

Laws mean nothing to criminals, thats why they are called criminals.

#1. Thats what hitler thought.
#2. Criminals ignore laws. Gun laws affect only the law abiding.
#3. See #2, POWDERMAN.  :o :o

And we definantly better not let anyone carry in national parks, cause they will just shoot every animal and person they see. Heaven forbid they shoot that majestic grizzly that killed a couple of people in Yellowstone this summer.  He was just hungry.

I just hate that they have the power to control our minds.  Its weird my other tools dont tell me to kill every animal I see.  My hammer and screwdriver would do the job but they dont have that power over me.

1 so you are willing to have an on duty policeman with every citizen 24 hrs a day since you are removing their means of self protection ?
2 There are in excess of 71 million guns , how do you planr to reimburse the owners for the cost ?
3 true but to do so the signing also would not have taken place.
4 best not to debate but take their stupitidy one more step to absurd and hope they see it. Most won't !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Since there is no arguing with them, if it comes up I just shrug my shoulders softly tell them... I'll not only have guns I'll carry them no matter what the laws are, the government does not grant me that right, I have it already.  That will usually end any discusion right there, heck it doesn't matter what they think anyway, you might as well just tell it like it is and get it over with.
The above response works in most all cases....short and sweet.

I've learned to take a different approach. There is no reasoning with a hoplophobe, their irrational fear of guns takes away any logic their brain may be capable of. Instead I tell them how much fun target shooting is. I tell them how much fun it is to go plinking away at cans, balloons etc. I try to stress the fun of it all and also how much my kids like to shoot. I stay away from the political side of it.

Using this approach I was able to get my mother (a longtime gun hater) to actually go to the range with me a couple years ago. She actually enjoyed herself and told me that it really was fun. A little background on my mother - somewhat of a flower child, a very liberal Massachusetts raised Irish Catholic who voted for Ted Kennedy every single time he ran for office. She thought the Brady Bill was a good idea after Reagan got shot. All in all your typical hoplophobe. She never let me have guns growing up. I've had a big impact on her thoughts about guns by doing the best thing possible - taking her shooting.

Doublebass73, your approach is much better than mine I admit it with no problem, if you can change someone by showing them the experience it's worth it.  I guess I should have more patients, but some people are so dead set against them right off that it just seems so hopeless.  I seem to have a shorter tolerance these days.
Maybe a goal....change one hard core anti gunner every year would help the situation, the word spreads pretty fast.  Maybe you are on to something here.

That's a great goal. At first it can be frustrating trying to explain how great guns are to anti gunners but if we get nasty or condescending with them it will only turn them away. My mother was very anti gun but between seeing her young granddaughter shoot and how much I stressed safety at the gun range took the fear out of it for her. I made sure we had only a .22 rifle with us and nothing loud that might scare her. After she took her first shot she looked at me and said "wow, that was kinda fun".

Doublebass73, you probably have the best approach.  my daughter tries my patience sometimes when she starts leaning to the left.  however, she loves her P22 and is a crack shot with that and a rifle.  if those ignorant dems would try it they would like it.

How were you guys able to resist the urge to shoot everyone you met?

Well, there are several ways. First is that we realize that every whim that flits through our minds doesn't constitute a need that we have to fulfill.  We realize that with rights come responsibilities.
We learned long ago to exercise self control and self discipline.

We know that all of those concepts are strange to most left wingers, and that most of them will continue to project their wish-fulfillment fantasies on the people they hate.  Just because they lack enough self discipline to safely own firearms, they shouldn't project their own violent fantasies on others.

I started this discussion and want to thank everyone for their input.

The only thing I've ever seen that would change a gungrabber's mind was to be confronted with a NEED for a weapon.  My wife was anti-gun when we married, some 47 years ago.  She was super-critical of my "obsession", as she called it, with having them.  Then came the night when I was on the midnight shift and someone tried to break down the back door of our apartment...she formed an instant, lifelong bond with the bedside revolver.

I think it was during the '92 Los Angeles Riots when some of the usually anti-gun crowd decided they needed guns for self protection.  Flooded into gun shops and were outraged that there was a waiting period for guns.  How DARE they be made to wait!  Didn't the shop owners know they were Special People, with Power and Influence?  But they voted for the same capons that gave us the waiting periods again.
