I'm gonna call it "Garbage"
« on: July 16, 2011, 06:31:16 AM »

Man, I try to maintain an open mind, and I hate to use the G word, but I'm gonna pull the Garbage card here.

I've just seen an ad in a gun magazine, for Rossi's new "lever action" rifle (or is it a handgun?).  It is a hollywood style, cut-down version of the classic model 94, but with the buttstock cut down as well to just behind the pistol grip (with a steel butt piece no less).

Oldsters will remember this as the gun carried by Steve McQueen in Wanted, Dead or Alive.  Youngsters will remember this as the gun carried by the femal first office in the one-season science fiction series called Firefly.

However you may remember it, I think it is utter garbage.  Can't imagine how you would aim it, since the stock is so short that it won't fit in your shoulder, and the sights are so far forward that you can't hold it out and aim it like a handgun.

Maybe they are trying for a new group of customers,  . . . shooters of great hollywood prop guns that are utter trash.  If so, then they can probably sell those folks, for another $200 or so, a genuine carry holster for this thing, as worn by Steve McQueen.  Wow, won't that be cool.

Great marketing, though.

Offer a good product and you will sell everybody one each.  But if you chop it off, re-introduce it in an obsolete caliber, or put a compass in the stock, a certain percentage of your customer base will buy the another one because its available.

Now, a tacticool lever action with a folding stock and a silencer, got to have that!

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

It is fun to watch the 14 episodes of Firefly (and the sequel movie called Serenity), because the poor female actor is actually trying to aim the gun, using the sights.  She kinda holds it up in front of her face, about 8 inches from her nose, and keeps moving it slightly forward and backward, trying to get the sights to focus and settle down.  She probably went and got some formal gun training before filming these episodes, and learned how to use rifle sights, and then actually tried to aim the thing.  A noble effort.

i dont really see the point of it myself.theres really no way yu could hit anything with it i would imagine. to me the biggest thrill in shooting is hitting what i aim at.there is a certain market for novelty guns, i guess thats what they are aiming for.

I also have to wonder, if you are yanking that lever up and down on such a short weapon, wouldn't the muzzle be swaying and pointing everywhere?  Could be dangerous.

I think it would make a perfect companion piece to the Judge.

An unweildy rifle style handgun to go along with a big bulky handgun that isn't very accurate with .45 Colt loads and throws really lousy patterns with .410 rounds!

Neither one appeals to me, but apparently a lot of people find them interesting.

I would like to have one in .357 for HD, can't really think of any other use for it. As a HD weapon I think it would work well once you got use to the way it shoots and had some practice with it. It's a novelty item and I bet they sell quite a few of them.

there's nothing it can do that a conventional rifle, shotgun or handgun can't do.
however, if you have extra funds it would make an interesting toy.

I've looked at em, would be a good truck/UTV gun for some quick shots at a coyote/skunk up at the cabin.  The Trappers I have are just a bit to long to swing around the cab of both.  DP

I think they saw all the AK and AR pistols that seem to be selling and decided to try a lever action version.

Great if you want a range toy that looks like something out of an old TV western series.  Lousy if you want a gun to do anything practical with.  As said, it doesn't do anything a lever action rifle or a revolver in the same caliber can't do better.  It just looks a little different.

Nothing against anybody who wants one, but for my money I'd get the whole rifle.

Well it that works out maybe they will offer a 450Marlin with a 26-28 inch octagon barrel with a Receiver mounted Ladder "Peep" sight and nice walnut stocks.

I would buy it the day it came out.

I agree that these sawed off rifles appear to have little usefullness.  But I'm seeing them on display at shops all over my region.  Seems like an expensive toy but each to his own i say.

Yea, if they would just make the Judge revolving carbine in a 45-70 then you'd have something.

Yep, my assesment also. Like my Ruger 22 Charger - fun to shoot but no real use when I have a Remi 700 .223 heavy barrel, a Marlin 60 (.22LR) with scope/bipod, a Ruger Mark II, a MArlin 39A lever .22, and a S&W 610 .22 revolver.

Still fun to shoot but more an attention getter at the range.

My thoughts exactly. That's the reason I bought my Ruger .22 Charger.

It's called a Mare's Leg that was the name McQueen's character gave it most likely because it kicked like one. ;)
They look cool ,but I'm not sure they fill a purpose that is not already better filled by something else.

With the recent BATF changes, can you add a full length buttstock to one?  That would make it useful.

Handled a couple at the last gun show.  They had all the grace and poise of an Acme brick. Too big and heavy for a holster gun, too awkward to sight, too short (legally) for even an abbeviated buttstock and way bigger than any .44 or .45 I own (and can hit with).

McQueen was really great since his didn't even have sights, according to old photos.

aim you say , novel idea . Only aim I see is to remove cash from the buyers pocket. But the judge fits the same slot IMHO.

Calling it "garbage" is pretty rough ain't it? Just 'cause you don't like it don't mean it's garbage. It would make for a pretty good home defense weapon or just plain fun gun. :)
To each his own... I think it's pretty neat.

Wow... I put this in the COMPLETELY WRONG thread... Ignore please.  Was for the Judge, not the Mare's Leg.

Thanks, NGH

Actually, I might just have to move the Judge up on my list right to the top.  I just found a small rattler up by my porch last night.  That means there is probably more around as well as a couple of bigger ones.  Got lucky and saw it move as I was reaching for the valve to turn off my sprinklers.  Later, I bought some CCI shotshells for my .45 but then it has to be loaded/unloaded to get one in the chamber.  Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a Judge around with some .410's in it.  The smaller one with the 2.5" cylinder would be fine.  Easier to carry around than a shotgun.  I'd just stick with #8's for snakes around the place with maybe 2 .45's in it for scaring off dogs/coyotes or whatever.  This is what I see the Judge's niche as.  A carry gun/truck gun for snakes with a couple of .45's for backup just in case.

Guy had some of these at the last gun show I attended.  He said, per ATF, they are handguns, and must be recorded as such.  Also said it was illegal to put a full stock on it.........

Someone else can have these, I don't have a use for one.

And, the word "gun" and "toy" should not be used in the same sentence.  Guns are seriously dangerous killing machines, and shouldn't be bought by anyone who thinks it would be a great toy just to play around with.  What are they going to do with this one?  Dress up like a cowboy and run around with it in their car?

P.S.- No offense intended to SASS shooters.  (I shot SASS myself many years ago.)  Point is, this piece would not even be allowed in those matches.
