Guy had some of these at the last gun show I attended.  He said, per ATF, they are handguns, and must be recorded as such.  Also said it was illegal to put a full stock on it.........

Someone else can have these, I don't have a use for one.

A full stock would be an ATF no-no    - but hows bout a 6" thick slip on rubber recoil pad?   ;D ;D ;D

I think it's the popularity of the 2009 movie "Zombieland" that spawned the release of the Rossi Mare's Leg.  While this is not a practical gun, it is a cool one.  I'm guessing "Generation Y" will be buying these to fight off the zombies that are coming soon.

i have  an  older one  in 44 mag
paid  way too much for it
fun to shoot with  44 specials
kinda afraid to be behind the sights with  full power  44mags...i added a wrist sling
BTW  i shoot a 500 smith revolver  with no problems

i will keep  mine....
it  is  FAR  from  my favorite gun

now that the price is down  on these
i  might just get one  in 357

A full stock would be an ATF no-no    - but hows bout a 6" thick slip on rubber recoil pad?   ;D ;D ;D

Anything that's designed to put it to your shoulder would be a big no-no.

If you wanted to do that you could do the whole $200 SBR tax stamp thing.  It may be kind of silly in some regards to make a lever action short barreled rifle.  But if that's what someone wanted to do with their money, well then OK.  Most guys doing SBRs are doing AR or AK or Tommy or something 'tacticool'.  Maybe a lever action trapper with a 12" barrel would be cool just to be different.  Still, it would fall into the same category as the Mare's Leg does to me, fine for someone but not really what I'll spend my money on.

A quick note on 'slip on' sneaky work arounds.  Just remember that the $200 tax stamp is a small fraction of what you'd pay a lawyer just for the retainer if you got caught just doing it on the sly.  It's just plain cheaper to do it legally, and it's....legal.  I'll bitch and moan about our gun restriction laws with the best of them, but we can still have most anything we can afford without breaking the law in this country.  We just have to stay within some foolish boundries that the legislatures have created for us.  Oh well.  Just throwing that on the table.

a 12 inch trapper would be  nice
$200 is just a drop in the bucket  compared to the pare work
then  you still  can't cross state  lines at will once you  have it
too  much trouble  just to  cut 4 inches from the gun

as mention above.....the ruger  charger
thought that  was the stupidest gun  i ever  saw
my son  thought  it was the koolest thing he ever  saw
we  now have a few  of them
its fast becoming  one of my favorites.........great  truck gun

like i said differnt strokes for differnt folks. Id never buy one of those revolver rifles tarrus sells or one of those stupid judge pistols everyone wants. I think ruger chargers are a joke. How about a marlin or winchester lever action 410. About silly. Glocks? Wouldnt have one if it were free. Everyone has differnt tastes in guns. Some think im silly to buy a bump fire stock for my ars but i think its a ball! Lets see i can keep going. Savage bolt guns are to ugly to own. Anything in 357 other then a lever gun is a waste of my time ect ect. Now anyone that doesnt agree with all my ideas is just plain stupid cause there all junk!  :P

I "think" you can turn this pistol into a rifle, legally buy adding a full length stock, but not the reverse.

Cheesehead,

Not if the length of the barrel, or the overall length of the "rifle," ends up being too short.

The Rossi "Ranch Hand" has a 12 inch barrel.  Adding a stock would make it a short barrelled rifle and thus illegal without a stamp.

Man, I try to maintain an open mind, and I hate to use the G word, but I'm gonna pull the Garbage card here.

I've just seen an ad in a gun magazine, for Rossi's new "lever action" rifle (or is it a handgun?).  It is a hollywood style, cut-down version of the classic model 94, but with the buttstock cut down as well to just behind the pistol grip (with a steel butt piece no less).

Oldsters will remember this as the gun carried by Steve McQueen in Wanted, Dead or Alive.  Youngsters will remember this as the gun carried by the femal first office in the one-season science fiction series called Firefly.

However you may remember it, I think it is utter garbage.  Can't imagine how you would aim it, since the stock is so short that it won't fit in your shoulder, and the sights are so far forward that you can't hold it out and aim it like a handgun.

Maybe they are trying for a new group of customers,  . . . shooters of great hollywood prop guns that are utter trash.  If so, then they can probably sell those folks, for another $200 or so, a genuine carry holster for this thing, as worn by Steve McQueen.  Wow, won't that be cool.

  Mannyrock
Many go for the cool factor.  I have a buddy that chops and adds this or that to different guns, they look mean but you can not hit the floor  with them.  The AR and AK pistols look neat till you shoot them.  Some how I am not as good as any actor in Holly wood that can knock the eye out of a knat with these.   i agree that the Mule leg, while looking good, is not practicle as either a hunting or defensive gun.  But again people will buy stuff just for the cool factor.
I often thought a reproduction of the old volcanic pistol would be neat.  A small framed lever in an actual pistol hockey stick look that shot 22LR, 32 S&W, or one of the short big bores like 44 Russian, 45 Schofield, or a Medium like 38S&W.  I guess with a rachet system in the lever larger cases can be made like 45 Colt.  The cost and availibility of ammo would kill the project except for 22LR.  After all the Henry rifle, of the civil war fame, was made from the volcanic pistol.

The Henry evolved from the Volcanic pistol?  That I didn't know.  Sounds like a good place to start some casual research from.

Now I gotta go find some more old books about old guns.  My wife will be thrilled.

LOL, when i was a kid I was the gun kid, and read everything I could about them.  Any history of Winchester will start on the gun side with the Volcanic.  i found out when I asked if there were any lever action shotguns or handguns when I was about 12, way before the internet and found the 1887 and 1901 winchester lever shot guns and the Volcanic as a pistol.

And, the word "gun" and "toy" should not be used in the same sentence.  Guns are seriously dangerous killing machines, and shouldn't be bought by anyone who thinks it would be a great toy just to play around with.  What are they going to do with this one?  Dress up like a cowboy and run around with it in their car?

My thoughts exactly, Mannyrock.  They're not "toys".

Some of you guys need to ease up and not take yourselves so seriously. Can't use toys and guns in the same sentence?

I think I just did.  ;)

Looks like an interesting toy to me even if it is not very practical. To each their own I guess.

One man's garbage is another man's treasure.

Really! About 7 years ago I picked an old train set off a curbside garbage pile (I even asked the owner first) and ended up selling it for $400!
