250 Savage Improved
« on: July 16, 2011, 08:56:11 AM »
Is a 250 Savage AI suitable for a G-2 Contender frame?

I have no need to hotrod this cartridge & intend to use standard 250 Savage reloading data.

I don't THINK the G2 is that much stronger than the old Contender. So I'd say NO to this rechamber. Why not go to the Encore frame? IF you NEED more OOMPH than most TC chamberings, try a 30-30 AI, and use standard 30-30 ammo for practice.

Both the 250 and 250AI have been done on the Contender in the past (by at least Jones, Mike B and White), but most folks consider them borderline and too much for it except with reduced loads.  If you are not going to drive it at or near its full potential why bother, there are plenty of other good quarter bore choices that don't push the envelope on a Contender (even at their full potential).   If you just have to do it, the AI is the better choice of the two for the Contender though.

Other than if the three gents above still do, as far as I know none of the custom barrel makers offer it for the Contender or G2 Contender these days, nor does TC.   So that's a pretty definitive answer I'd think.   Some of them do offer it for the Encore though.

TC has never advertised/published that the G2 Contender is any stronger than the Contender, another definitive answer IMO.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

IMO the .257 JDJ is a better alternative than the .250 or .250 AI, and is Contender compatible. I've owned a .250 XP-100 for about 20 years, and a .257 JDJ Contender for about 10.
