Range / chrono report 45 Colt Classic carbine
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:19:00 AM »
The load is a 250 gr XTP over 26gr of H110 ( Just a hair above minimum in Hodgdon's data) in Win cases lit by CCI large pistol mag primers. OAL 1.605 with a lightish crimp. Now this load claims 1400 fps in a handgun, and I expected more from the 20 inch carbine, but my average velocity is 1755 fps with low deviations and excellent accuracy. 3 rounders at 100 were 2 inches or less. Primers look fine and the cases now have what i call a 30-30 bulge. If you look at cases fired in the typical 30-30 you know what I mean. Extraction is fine, cases are still sooty but nowhere near that of cowboy and factory loads. Recoil is tolerable, however, I now have several recoil hickeys! Gonna try

Do you intend to hunt deer with that load? If so, you may check around a bit to see if your velocity fits inside the bullet's intended velocity range.  I never realized how easy it is to push a bullet for the 45LC too fast. Most times the bullets are intended to expand at the lower velocities most 45LC pistols are made for. I don't recall the stats, but ran into a problem with a Barnes bullet a few years back. I was pushing it too fast and a deer ran farther than expected due to the bullet losing it's pedals and acting more like a solid than an a hollow point.

I wont hunt with a 250gr XTP at that speed. Hornady rates it to a max of 1600fps. I've used it , with great success in my inline .50 at 1550fps, but this is too much speed for my taste. The .45 240 Mag XTP would be a better choice at these speeds.  My goal is to match my muzzleloaders speed and I dont think I can do that with H110. Right now its the only powder I have... Today 22 gr of H110 under a 300gr non-mag XTP got me right about 1500fps, and that bullet is rated to 1700fps.

I think the 240 xtp/ mag. would be a better option also, havent tried them yet but ordering a box tommorrow and will try them in the 45 and lite 454 loads.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

Could you please give me a reference where you found that load.  I went through both Hornady's and Hodgdon's data for .45LC in both rifle (Hornady) and revolver(Hornady & Hodgdon).  I found no loads whatsoever using H110 and 250 gr. XTPs.  I found no handgun loads that came anywhere near approaching 1400 fps with any powder.  The information must be somewhere.  Anyone out there have any clues?

Pete

An adder:  I also went through Lee, Speer and Lyman's data and found nothing with H110 or exceeding 1100 fps.  I did find a 250 gr. XTP load for Ruger and T/C in Hornady running 1400 fps max. over 24.6 gr. H4227.

Hodgdon list 26.5gr  MAX H110 for the 250gr XTP in their TC/Ruger data, I use their TC Lil'gun data for the 270gr Speer Gold Dot and 250gr Hornady SST(FTX, same bullet), get 1925fps, but if'n I were working up another load now, I'd give Reloder 7 a shot or three!  ;)

Pete,
Check out Hodgdon's website, they have handgun data for the 250 XTP over 1400 fps (Ruger T/C obviously) with Lil'Gun and H110. I have personally shot the max charge of 25.5 grains of Lil'Gun under the 250 XTP out of my 10" Contender, it was a handful. ;D

The data is in Hodgdon's magazine type load book in the T/C Ruger section. I've been looking for Reloader 7 data as I have a left over pound of it. I'd like to get a nice 1350-1550fps load for the 250gr. Any help appreciated!

That shouldn't be hard to do, the Hornady 8th lists several powders in their Ruger/TC 250gr XTP data that should get you there, N105, AA#9, 2400, AA5744, H4227 and IMR4227, all with 1150-1400fps velocities in the 10" barrel.

Tim,
This is a little different, but I'm getting a promising load in 45lc with 27.5 grs of Imr 4198 over about 190 gr Ranch dog cast.  Gotta tap the cases or use a drop tube.
