Sako-Style Extractor for Rem 700
« on: July 17, 2011, 09:41:34 AM »
Does adding a Sako style extractor to a Rem 700 make the feeding more reliable? I usually prefer controlled round feeding and wonder if this is a satisfactory compromise.

Thanks, Dinny

The Sako extractor conversion will not make a 700 into a controlled round action. There is still the majority of the lip that surrounds the bolt face in place. The extractor pushes the round ahead until the chamber stops it and the extractor snaps over the rim. Also please note the sako extractor cut breaches the '3 rings of steel' and the M700 has very poor gas handling characteristics should a primer pierce. Such an occurance will likely result in injury to the shooter. The 700 action was engineered to contain any gas released accidentally from a fired round and an itegral part of that is the rim that is cut away to install the sako extractor..

Thanks for the info. Should I be concerned hunting Alaskan dangerous game with a standard Rem 700? Any other recommendations to improve the feeding reliability? I know, as is, it's not bad but it's not a CRF either.

Thanks, Dinny

If using any rifle for such game I'd reccomend running the ammo in question thru the action to 'prove' their functionality, even factory.. I've had remington's for many many years with few problems.. That said I have had the extractors fail either temporarily or permanently but then I've seen even the vaunted mauser fail.. In that instance the extractor broke,..,the result a 'slow' single shot.. I advise anyone entering such a hunt to take a backup rifle along..just in case. The erality is though that there is little likelyjhood of a problem with a M700. Good luck and good hunting.. pictures would be nice!!

;)  Now I use mostly 700 actions...in the past my major failures in actions that could have ruined a hunt if only wone rifle were taken, were with mauser style actions and a Sako....they could all fail, but so far the 700's have not for me...
