Last military rifle purchase was probably a type 38 Arisaka a couple of years ago that had been sporterized and rechambered to 257R, so it is a 6.5x257R  Bought rifle thru a pawnshop who was selling it for a very elderly gent who'd had the Arisaka sporterized for his wife to use when she was alive.  Rifle may have been done by a couple of gunsmiths in partnership that had quite a reputation for their work back in late 70's.  Anyway, had to increase its lenght of pull in the old Fagen stock from its 11" to a little over 13".  LOL, if I could shoot a 4" 100 yd group with the rifle, I had a very good day with it.  No pattern to bullets on a target, litteraly like shooting buckshot at a target.  Tried many a different kind of bullet/powder/charge and etc. with no luck improving its accuracy.  Did do something that got a 100 yd group down to around 2 1/2" on a good shooting day.  Then one day, tried a reduced load with IMR SR4759 in the rifle, just to avoid using powder I'd use in reloads for other rifles.  LOL, darn if I didn't start getting cloverleafs with the rifle.....something I'd never had.  Now days, I expect a 3/4-1 " group with the rifle at 100 yds when I shoot it.

  I just bought a Steyr 95 carbine.  I like the feel of this rifle and its in nice condition, took the barreled action out of the stock and it has way to much cosmoline on it I will have to clean it up before doing anything with it.  My plan is to strip it down and see if I can get it to feed 410 shotshells. If I can get that to work I will get rid of all the barrel bands , swivels ect , sporterize the stock and remove about a pound of metel off of the bolt. I would like to get the weight down to about 6 lbs. and have a handi short 410 repeater, my grandkids would get a lot of use out of it in that platform.  :)   Jed

Why all the mods? Wouldn't it just be a lot cheaper to buy an inexpensive 410?

Schmidt-Rubin Straight-pull in 7.5 x 55mm - now sporterized with black walnut Monte Carlo stock and glass imbeded.  Possibly the most accurate rifle that I own.....three shots on a dollar-bill at 137 yards through iron-sights....using Match-Grade GP-11 ammo.  Bought the K-31 for $109.00 and have had four different offers for at least three-times that amount!

Why 137 yards?  'Cuz I can't see any further than that!!

The farm where i stayed back in 1973 on my very first blackbear hunting trip the farmer had his 30-30 scoped marlin sighted in for 143yds.  Its 143yds to his fence line from his front porch.
The most accurate surplus military rifles are;
Swedish mauser 6,5mm  (6,5mmx55mm swede)
Finnish mosin m27  7,62x54r
Swiss  K31 in 7,5 swiss (7,5mm x 55mm)
Russian 91/30 mosin  (7,62x54r)  Some of the sniper quality rifles got thru as standard rifles.
German 98k 8mm mauser (8mmx57mm)  Some of these are accurate too.
I'm sure there are more accurate rifles when using the right ammo in the right shooters hands of course.

Well, a spur of the moment led me to buy a Walther P-1 9mm pistol. I did not like it much. So i just traded it to a guy for some cash and his Yugo M48 8mm Mauser. So now I have two M48's I haven't even taken to the range yet. And a Swiss 96/11 conversion rifle I picked up at a local yard sale.

Traded into this 5.3mil SA M1 Garand, Century imported with a Taiwanese barrel.  Needed a stock, oprod & safety.  Would have traded the barrel, but the throat gauged 3 and the muzzle 1!
This batch was sold to Taiwan, rebarreled in '68, sold to Guatamala, then bought and imported by Century.  The Republic of China mark on the receiver was scrubbed, but it has a Chinese marked windage drum.  Years ago I picked up an Israeli Mauser that spent time in Guatamala, It was lots rougher.

What's my favorite Contender?  The one I'm shooting!

I changed my direction again and im going  the 22cal military training rifles.  There are some really neat looking training rifles out there too.  the book to have is the US MARTIAL 22 TRAINING RIFLES.  It has most of them listed.  You will find most of then in your lgs covered with eons of dust. bb

Can some explain to me how to gauge barrels, and what the numbers mean?
