Bought them both at right around the same time. Works been pretty rough lately, no extra cash to appease my firearm demons.

I'm not buying like I used to but I think the last one to fit that bill was a Jap Arisaka 99.  It was pretty clean except it looked like a grenade went off behind and to the right.  I knew even then that front line soldiers often added "character" to battlefield pick-ups and then peddled them to rear area personnel so they could develop their own stories.  This was very prevalent in the Pacific.  Come to think of it, I sold it awful fast at a show.  I tried to tell the guy all this but he didn't seem to want to hear it.

Swiss K-31, 7.5x55.  Three hogs were killed by this rifle last December.  I will be shooting it in the Vintage Rifle Championship Match at Camp Perry next month.

Picked up a MAS 36 chambered in .308. During the conversion, they cut the metal piece that holds the forend of the stock to the action,;front of the stock rattled around loose, gun keyholed bullets at 100 yds. Was able to replace the cut piece, hoping it helps. Also picked up some Rem. reduced recoil .308's, to better match the orig. bullet weight of the french ammo. Nice handy carbine,if I can get it to shoot!

In a classic case of a small purchase gone wild I bought three rifles and several bayonets last year in one purchase.  I was actually only looking for a bayonet for my Garand.  The ad I answered was offering a collection but I figured I'd sell off the ones I didn't need.  Now, here is where it goes haywire.  Y'all have seen the pics of my Krag sporter.  I've always wanted an unaltered version to compliment it and in talking with the gentleman about the bayonets I found out that he had several surplus arms he was willing to part with including a Krag.  It was, as they say, downhill from there.  Long story short in picture form:

Rifles L to R: '03 Springfield, 98 Krag and 1884 Trapdoor Springfield.
Bayonets top to bottom: M-1873, M-1896, M-1903, M-1, M-6 and M-7.

A No4 Mk1 Brit. But it was sporterized in, I'm assuming, the 60's, the heyday of military sporters. Also picked up an M1 carbine, albeit a contempory Auto Ordinance IAI in trade. Looking forward to giving them a go at the range soon.

Last November I bought two 1903A3s from my friend that owns a gun shop in NC were I go deer hunting every year. One was a Remington 2 groove barrel and the other is a Smith Corona 4 groove barrel. They were really dirty on the outside with some surface rust in spots with cosmo on the inside. The Smith Corona looks like it has not been shot and the Remington only little. Problem is that I have not been able to take them to the range to shoot them yet. When I can get the time to go it is either way too hot or raining. The story behind these rifles goes like this. A older black man brought them into my buddies shop after finding them in a closet after the death of his father. He said that he was 7 years old when his father who was a truck driver in the Red Ball Express came home from WWII. His father brought these two rifles home with him and must have put them in the back of the closet and never touched them again. He said it all came back to him when they were cleaning out the house to sale after his father died and he found them. This fellow was well known by my buddy so he was telling the truth.

Great story shot1.  Only thing better than a surplus rifle is a surplus rifle with a story.  I wish my Garands (Springfield 1940, 1941) could talk.

I just picked up another 98 Krag full military.  I got the gun at a steal at a garage sale, $70.00 out the door.  It has a bad barrel, lots of pitting, and the front sight is missing.  I bought it for the wood and metal.  The wood is excellent, some small dents and scratches, but it has not been sanded and does not appear to have been re-finished.  All the metal is there and in very good shape, minor surface wear.  I plan to use the wood and metal to bring another gun back to its original glory as a fully military weapon, then I will take the left over pieces and make a wall hanger.

But I didn't buy it - I swapped a sporterized Arisaka and a set of dies for this Yugo M48a:

Think I did well!  The barrel and bolt looked to be unfired.  Assume it was refurbished import as the stock looks to has been refinished.

You did good Ray.  You were lucky if that sporter Arisaka was worth $100 even with dies.  That Yugo is worth double that at least, probably more.  Check to see if the trigger guard and base plate are BOTH stamped or if only one is and the other milled.  Both stamped is actually an M48b even though it's marked M48a on the receiver.  M48b is what mine is.  I believe ALL M48b versions were manufactured for export.  Also your buttstock plate should be steel instead of the pad but I can understand why someone would want some cushion.

Curtis,

Receiver is shows M48A on top.  Base is stamped and shows same SN as that on the receiver, bolt and the stock.  Trigger guard has no markings and looks to be milled.

So what do you think?

If the trigger guard is milled and not stamped then it is indeed an M48a.  Congrats!

My last was a Mauser K98k Yugoslavian capture, reworked by shop VR69 (one of the better quality shops). She's a real beauty, shoots very good with Federal Vital Shock ammo.
I need to get an issue bayonet and issue leather sling.

My last rifle was free, just had to sign the form at the pawn shop, seems a lady came in with deceased fathers guns and made a deal with gun shop/ pawn shop for the lot, in it was a sporterized 1891 Argentine mauser, ground crest, all matching SN#'s 'T-xxxx' =  mfg 1900, the job was not the greatist bent bolt and removed rear sight,Williams ramp front & peep site, the shop owner wanted the embarrassing thing gone and Ask'd me if I wanted it, shure I said  ;D
so have a 7.65 Argentine.
The last one I bought was a MAS49/56 (308) for $250, a month latter another $250 for the APXL 806 scope & mount mated to the rifle.
7.62x39  Carcano  $180 (Mida Breska 1919)
Mosin P-27 for $10 sold as a barreld action (tomato stake class) add another $230 in parts to make it shoot.

Last Fall I purchased a "bubba-ed" 1917 Eddystone Enfield.  The metal work hadn't been butchered--just the stock.  Certainly didn't need it, but the seller finally asked if I'd want it for a "C" note.  I'd looked at the bore and it looked great, so...

Turns out, the old rifle is a gem!  I had to change out the front sight (shooting too high), but that was no big deal.  It will put three of my 180 gr. Hornady Round Nose handloads into an honest 2" @ 100 yards with its battle sights.  The two stage trigger is crisp and light.  And the exceedingly broad butt makes it a gentle shooter even off the bench.

Couldn't help myself in November.  I used it to fill one of my deer tags.  Kinda nostalgic.  My dad's deer rifle was a sporterized Enfield '06.  The old war vet now rides in my truck along with a filled daypack as my "just in case" gun.

All you guys are doing some awesome buys like the yugo m48's, the spanish cetme's,  the $100 c note sporters, heck i'd buy them all day long for a c'note.  The french 49/56 in 308, I have 4 of these two in 308 and two in 7,5mm french.  I had to purchase two of each because once my son gets his hands on it at the range my little french commando rifles i never get to see them again till we load the car to leave. The Cetme in 308 is a tad heavy but mine is very accurate even with the 308 ball surplus ammo.  I get 4" groups + with it.

Stay looking too i'm seeing the trade in's more and more now which means great affordable buys for us.  I have my eye on a thompson 1927a1 tommy gun and i may grab it because its off the beaten track on my collecting.     CZY

I still kick myself when i passed on a 303 britt sporter enfield that was only $75 and it actually looked good the way they cut it.

On the Enfield, did he leave a little wood on top?  That's how my Dad did mine, got my first rifle-killed deer with it.  Wish I still had it but I went through a phase when I thought all I needed were expensive rifles.
