New purchase: H&R model 157 - anything I should know?
« on: July 18, 2011, 11:18:09 AM »
Dear Sirs,

Hereby a post from your ally in far away Denmark :)

I just picked up a 1982 vintage model 157, chambered for .30/30 win. (ay serial), a very rare bird on my side of the pond. As new condition, paid 170$ :) have not shot it yet, waiting for permit to clear.

I Will be shooting it mostly as a "plinker" with cast boolits / reduced loads, 150 grs boolit @ 1200 fps using 7.5 to 8 grs. Trailboss.

I can't help but wonder if accuracy could be improved by pillar bedding / adding a shim between the swivel stud and the mannlicher type forend? Would this be an improvement? Are there Any "must do" modification that Will improve accuracy (trigger job, if so - how)?

Another question, Can I fit other barrels from present "H&R" offerings?

Look forward to Any info you Can give,

Kind regards

Mikkel

The 30-30 is a great caliber, you will love it.  Unfortunately, the older versions, like yours, are not suitable for high pressure barrels.  You will be limited to shotgun barrels and low pressure rounds like the 22 Hornet.  Most (all) of this info is in the FAQ'S at the top of this section.  Floating the forend does help accuracy, at least it did on my Hornet, but not as much as I had hoped.  The older ones are much lighter and easier to carry than the new ones, accuracy is at least as good.  Enjoy!

Welcome aboard and congrats on the fine vintage find . I have both the 157 and 158 models and they are pretty much straight forward. Mine are in 22Rem Jet, 30-30 and the 22 Hornet. I would shoot it first before doing much tinkering .If it locks up tight and you keep to resonable load levels they will do exactly as designed. Mine are some of my favorites in my collection. Again congrats on the find and good luck. Kurt

Welcome Mikkel.  Tread cautiously here if you're not careful you'll find yourself a Handiholic like most of us with at least a half dozen of them.  As has been said, the old .30-30s are much in demand for their light weight and accuracy.  I think you did very well on the deal for the condition it is in.  I have not been able to find one like yours, but I haven't given up looking.

I put an "O" ring on the forend stud on all of mine.  I can't tell you how much if any it helps simply because all my Handis shoot better than I do.  It makes me feel better to know it's there ::)

Your command of American "English" is better than a lot of us born here.

How long does it take for the permit to clear?  Let us know how you do shooting it.  I forgot to mention, the Trail Boss loads are a lot of fun.

I only own two handi rifles but one is like yours and it shoots minute of prairie dog at 150 yards as demonstrated at the first GBO handi rifle PD shoot long ago. The way my eyes are right now I'd hate to have to repeat that. Yeah mine still wears factory iron sights only.

I thought I had a photo of it but don't seem able to locate it on this computer.

Dear Sirs,
thank you all for posting, much appreciated  ;D
Yes - the .30/30 is a great all-round caliber, I also own a 1971 Winchester 94 "Antique" in .30/30 - the colourcase hardend version with a brass sadle ring - which I enjoy shooting very much. Couldn't afford a pre-64 winnie at the time, so living with the slighty agricultural action  ;D . Decent accuracy of 4" @ 110 yds (100 meters) for 5 five shot strings with cheapo PRVI Partizan 170 grs. fodder, using peep sight from prone. People consider you a bit of an oddball here, if hunting with a .30/30, Danish hunters almost exclusively used either 6.5x55 Swedish, .308 Win. or 30-06. I never fail to mention that the .30/30 probably dropped more deer over the years than any of the others calibers  ;)

However, though I live in rural surroundings in an old farm (1892), I do have neighbours near by. So, shooting factory loads seems a bit like intruding onto their privacy (noise) and I don't want to alarm any neighbours - most Danes are slightly "gun-o-phobic", so an afternoons worth of plinking cans is frowned upon by most (sad really, but it is what it is, Danish constitution does not include a 2'nd ammendment - value yours!).
I therefor took up reloading recently, partly to be able to make some subsonic plinking loads for the .30 (with the added benefit of a reduced safety range) - but mostly to reduce my ammunition cost for my M&P 9L that I use for IPSC competitions. 50 rds. of so-so 9x19 mm ammo is 17-20$ if storebought here - and I use a lot!
Well, as luck would have it, I thought I might as well go "all in" and start casting my own boolits as well - wow, that's a lot of fun! Everybody in my gun club says "why bother", "You'll never make a none-leading 9mm load", etc... Old wives tales a plenty. Don't care, having too much fun scavanging alloy, making my own lube, etc. Just did my first batch of 150 grs. .30 boolits today (Lee mould, gascheck design), pan lubed in 1 lbs beeswax / 1 lbs vaseline with a tablespoon of "Superlube" (contains PTFE - aka Teflon) - looks promising!
Spoke to the gun shop today, my H&R has had a health check (all is well), and has had a discreet "period" scope mounted (sadly can't find a K4 weaver, would have been my first choice) - so now I just need to wait for the permit, normally takes 2-4 weeks to clear, but with holidays and all... could be more  >:(
I bought the H&R for three reasons:
1. No gun rack is complete without a light and handy Mannlicher stocked rifle
2. With a H&R it is very easy to visually inspect barrel for leading when developing a load for the .30/30
3. The accuracy of a scoped 157 I expect to exceed that of the winchester, so the H&R will serve as my test rig for the winchester (I know succes in the H&R does not neccessarily mean success in the winchester, they might slug differently and chamber / COL might vary, but should still be a good indicator for "a good load"
I really hoped that the 157 would accept a .223 barrel from a "present day" handi rifle, but seems this is not the case?
Kind regards

Mikkel

EDIT:
P.S.: Great tip regarding the O-ring - obvious way to do it, I was almost going at a wine cork with a fillet knife to make my own shim, now I'll just have to drink the wine and leave it at that :-)

Mikkel, one member here has a model 158 with a 223 Rem barrel fitted to it, but be aware the 223 operates at much higher pressure than the 30-30, 55kpsi compared to 42kpsi for the 30-30, so you would be doing so at your own risk as well as that of damaging the nice frame of the Model 157. Also be aware than with the exception of the Superlight contour barrels, the standard contour 223 barrel is much heavier than the vintage barrels, another reason not to want one, they aren't slim like your barrel. H&R Inc, who made your rifle and went out of business in 1986, never offered the 223 or any other high pressure chambering for their rifles, so you'd have to find a modern barrel or have a 22 Hornet barrel rechambered which is what he did, if I remember correctly.

And for those that don't know what a Model 157 looks like, here are some pics, not mine btw.  ;)

Mikkel just keep you eye out for a 157/158 Hornet bbl. Since you hand load you can now load them with near full case of LiL'gun, 35gr bullet Rem 6 1/2 primmer and get 27-2900 fps thats almost .223 velocity. Plus since you are now casting I am sure you could come up with a quite plinker. Kurt

Here's my Model 157.  It likes the Hornady 32 gr. V-max cartridges.  It's not exactly a tack driver but easily puts 2" groups on paper at 100 yards.

Hi All,

thought I owed you a result of my cast boolit reloading effort for the Model 157 - I am very pleased with the outcome.

The load is described earlier in this thread. I experimented with putting an O-ring over the threaded stud on the barrel / forend - this did not improve accuracy in my case, groups opened up to 1 1/2" - 2" at 50 yds, as opposed to .31" in standard condition - so I'll definetly leave this gun alone, more than happy with the degree of accuracy at hand, for the 30 year old rifle!

The trigger pull is pretty bad though, very heavy (don't have a scale to determin how heave, feels shotgun-ish @ 6 lbs or so, with a bit of creep at the end). Any good advice on improving and making the trigger lighter would be much appreciated.

P.S.: An empty .357 mag case (winchester brass) drops 8 grs. of Trailboss - I use this a dipper to speed reloading up in my "cheap ass" set-up - if you'll pardon my french :-)

Kind regards

Mikkel

Mikkal,

Take a look at the FAQs sticky thread at the top of this forum.  Do a control "f" search for "trigger" and you will find the information you need to do a trigger job on your handi.  Good luck and enjoy your new rifle.

As BB says the trigger info is there .Pay close attention to the parts that say go slow and check often. If you get it to light and( it does not take much )you will be starting over with new parts. They also lighten up on thier own with use. Tim has at least one that went very light on him. Kurt
